The Fantastic Four was the first comic book series of the Marvel modern age and the characters have now appeared on-screen three different times: in a low-budget 1994 adaptation, then in a 2005 reboot, and finally in its 2008 sequel. The franchise is being rebooted yet again with Fantastic Four, which opens in theaters on August 7 and features an all-new cast and origin story.

With the release date fast approaching, we decided to take a look at the cast of young and veteran actors that are bringing the classic Marvel characters back to the big screen.

Miles Teller As Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic

Miles Teller first gained attention for his critically acclaimed performances in Rabbit Hole and The Spectacular Now. He would go on to appear in such popular movies as the Footloose remake, 21 & Over and That Awkward Moment, before joining the ensemble cast of Divergent and its sequel, Insurgent.

But it was his role in last year's Academy Award-winning film Whiplash, opposite Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons, that proved Teller is one of the most talented actors of his generation. Before you see him play scientist-turned-superhero team leader Reed Richards in Fantastic Four, check out Teller going toe-to-toe with Simmons in this brilliant scene from Whiplash.

Kate Mara As Susan Storm/Invisible Woman

Kate Mara, along with her sister Rooney (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), are football royalty as the great-granddaughters of both New York Giants founder Tim Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney. Kate has appeared in such films as We Are Marshall, Shooter, 127 Hours and the Academy Award-winning Brokeback Mountain.

But it is her TV work that has made her a star, appearing in such popular shows as 24, American Horror Story: Murder House and the acclaimed Netflix series House of Cards. So before you watch Kate Mara play Susan Storm in the upcoming Fantastic Four, take a look at the famous scene from House of Cards, where Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) throws Mara’s naive Zoe Barnes in front of a moving train.

Michael B. Jordan As Johnny Storm/Human Torch

Jordan began his career as a teenager with a brief role on The Sopranos and in the movie Hardball starring Keanu Reeves. But it was his roles as Wallace on the first season of HBO’s The Wire and as quarterback Vince Howard on NBC’s Friday Night Lights that gained the attention of Hollywood.

Jordan would go on to make Red Tails for producer George Lucas before starring in Fantastic Four director Josh Trank’s first movie, Chronicle. Jordan also starred opposite his FF costar Miles Teller in the romantic comedy That Awkward Moment. But it was his role as real-life police-brutality victim Oscar Grant in the critically acclaimed independent film Fruitvale Station that made him a movie star.

Next, he will reteam with his Fruitvale director Ryan Coogler to play Apollo Creed’s son in the Rocky spin-off Creed, featuring Sylvester Stallone. Check out this clip from Fruitvale Station and watch the actor hold his own opposite Oscar winner Octavia Spencer.

Jamie Bell As Ben Grimm/The Thing

At the young age of 13, English actor Jamie Bell was plucked from obscurity to play the title role in the beloved film Billy Elliot. Since then, Bell has worked with some of the greatest directors of all time including Peter Jackson (King Kong), Clint Eastwood (Flags of Our Fathers), Doug Liman (Jumper) and Steven Spielberg (The Adventures of Tintin).

Recently, Bell has appeared in such diverse films as The Eagle, Man on a Ledge, Filth and Snowpiercer. But before you see Bell portray the fan-favorite character of the Thing in Fantastic Four, watch this clip from Billy Elliot and see why the actor’s early work is still some of his best.

Toby Kebbell As Victor Domashev/Doom

Much like Bell, fellow English actor Toby Kebbell has also worked with some of the greatest directors of all time including Oliver Stone (Alexander), Woody Allen (Match Point), Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla), Robert Redford (The Conspirator) and Steven Spielberg (War Horse). But it was his roles in tentpole films like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Wrath of the Titans and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes that has made him a go-to actor for big-budget Hollywood movies.

After Kebbell plays classic Marvel villain Doom in Fantastic Four, you'll be able to see him in Warcraft, based on the popular video game, as well as the upcoming remake of Ben-Hur. First check out this clip of Kebbell as Koba the Ape in Dawn, and you'll understand why he is such an in-demand actor.

Reg E. Cathey As Dr. Franklin Storm

After almost 30 years in the business, veteran actor Reg E. Cathey is finally experiencing the success he deserves. Children of the ’80s will remember him as one of the stars of the PBS educational show Square One, but he would eventually go on to appear in recurring roles on long-running series like Star Trek: The Next Generation, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Oz and The Wire. Cathey has also appeared in several popular movies including The Mask, Se7en, American Psycho and the cult-classic comedy Pootie Tang.

But the actor’s big break finally came when he was cast as Freddy’s BBQ owner Freddy Hayes opposite two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey in Netflix’s House of Cards, which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Cathey will play his biggest role in a studio film yet when he appears as Susan and Johnny’s father, Dr. Franklin Storm, in Fantastic Four.

Tim Blake Nelson As Harvey Elder

A celebrated playwright, screenwriter and director, as well as actor, Tim Blake Nelson first gained attention on the big screen for starring opposite George Clooney in the Coen brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou?. After directing 2000’s O, Nelson went on to appear in such films as The Good Girl, Minority Report, Holes, Meet the Fockers, Syriana and Lincoln.

In Fantastic Four, Nelson plays Harvey Elder, who in the comic books eventually becomes the villain the Mole Man. However, it is unclear at this time if Nelson’s character becomes his alter-ego bad guy in this installment or future sequels. But it is important to note that this is not the first time that Nelson has portrayed a Marvel supervillain: He appeared in The Incredible Hulk as Dr. Samuel Sterns, who in the comics becomes the villain the Leader. With Nelson taking the role of Elder in FF, it’s unknown if he will reprise his role as Sterns in future MCU movies.
