I was a huge fan of Meet the Parents when it first came out, back when Ben Stiller was in his prime, and the awkwardness of the situational humor was so much fun to watch. The sequel, Meet the Fockers, had its moments, though it never did manage to recapture the magic of the original. Now, just when you thought Hollywood had beaten the “Meet the Parents” concept into the ground comes a third installment called Little Fockers.
Based on the title alone, you can imagine what we’ll be in for this time around. Yes, the Fockers have had children since the last time we saw them (two to be exact), and this film looks to pick up as the grandparents (played again by Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner) arrive to visit Stiller’s Greg Focker, his wife (played by Teri Polo) and their kids. Hilarity is supposed to then ensue.
The first trailer definitely leaves an odd taste in my mouth as a lot of the rehashed jokes just don’t seem to have the same impact they used to. I’m hoping they’ve saved some of their funnier set pieces for the film, and I’m also hoping that the whole erection joke in the trailer isn’t the highlight of the entire movie. And though I’m not crazy about what I see here, I do reserve some judgment since the cast is pretty great. Joining Stiller and De Niro are Owen Wilson (returning as the ex boyfriend), Jessica Alba, Laura Dern, Harvey Keitel and Barbra Streisand.
