Ryan Reynolds has emerged as the front-runner in Lionsgate-Summit's plans to reboot the Highlander franchise. No official offer has been made, though Variety reports that both sides seem eager to work together.

Reynolds is coming off the box office success of Safe House, which paired him with Denzel Washington. The film ended up grossing over $200 million worldwide, with more than half of that coming from the domestic box office. Reynolds has taken his time and not committed to any other projects since Safe House.

Regardless of whether Reynolds signs on, the reboot already has a director attached with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intruders) set to helm the project.

The original film followed an immortal swordsman who battled other immortal warriors though the centuries. Christopher Lambert portrayed the original Highlander who was mentored by a dapper Sean Connery. Lambert portrayed Highlander for four films, before being replaced in a 2007 reboot by Adrian Paul, who also starred in the TV series.
