Birds of Prey

She's still handy with a bat. The flamboyant and wickedly funny Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) stood out in Suicide Squad as a smart, strong and sassy woman who always did whatever she felt was best for herself and others in any particular moment. Now free from a confining relationship, Harley instinctively takes action in Birds of Prey when she becomes aware that an infamous crime lord is targeting a naive young girl, teaming up with an unlikely trio of women who are equally determined to take the villain down.

When have we seen Harley Quinn on the big screen before?

Most recently, Harley Quinn appeared in Suicide Squad as Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist who is lured to the dark side by the villainous Joker. She lost her sanity after months of torture by Joker, becoming enslaved to his evil, believing herself to be in love with him and preferring to be known as Harley Quinn. She is forced into service as part of the so-called Suicide Squad and performs viciously, as expected. At the successful completion of the mission, she and other surviving squad members were returned to prison, where Harley received an unexpected visit from a former criminal cohort.

Who are the titular Birds of Prey?

Inspired by DC Comics lore, the dynamic team known as Birds of Prey includes the notorious Harley Quinn, wary mafia princess Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), savage songbird Black Canary (Jurnee Smollet-Bell), and sage cop Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). They come from different backgrounds, but are united by their need to defeat a common foe.

Who else stars?

A vengeful villain, Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor) rules Gotham, at least in his own mind. His primary accomplice, Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina), is known as a zealot who will execute whatever his boss commands.

What's the story?

Roman Sionis targets young Cassandra "Cass" Cain (Ella Jay Bosco). Her disappearance prompts a frantic search, turning the entire city upside down. Birds of Prey may be unlikely heroes, but they are the only ones brave and courageous enough to find her and defeat Roman.

Who wrote and directed?

Christina Hodson wrote the script, based on characters from DC. She previously penned the screenplay for action-adventure Bumblebee, as well as writing the original suspense thrillers Unforgettable and Shut In.

Cathy Yan directed. She is a former journalist who began making short films before making her feature directorial debut with Dead Pigs. The independent movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting. Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2) starred in the comedy-drama, which followed a diverse group of characters who are affected when thousands of dead pigs begin floating down a river in China.
