Q&A with Freya Allan

Fandango: How would you best describe Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes?

Freya Allan: This is a fresh continuation of an insightful and epic franchise. Our movie really feels like an adventure on an even greater scale. There is a very youthful and transformative journey at the centre of it with two characters catalysing each other to look beyond everything they’ve ever known of the world and with that comes a feeling of hope. There is a depth to this movie while also carrying you through a visually exciting and surprising world.

Who is your character Nova, and how has she survived amidst a planet controlled by the apes?

That is something I don’t want to reveal too much of. But she starts the film pretending to be a feral human to protect herself but eventually she is forced to reveal her true self: Mae. I think Mae and Nova hold a mirror up to one another and really cause each other to open their minds, but at the same time Mae has wants of her own and holds secrets she cannot reveal. A lot of her determination comes from her past and the people she loved and I really do feel it’s a case of she’ll die trying because that is all she has left.

We just learned that Nova/Mae speaks in the film. What else can you share about the humans in the film?

Most humans have been reduced to the shadows and can no longer speak or think as humans used to, so Mae is a very rare case and she is kind of carrying the weight of humanity on her shoulders throughout the movie.

What was something that you personally connected with the most when it came to Nova/Mae?  How did you get to know her when your worlds are so different?

It was a lot of conversations with Wes and the producers to try and get the specifics of her backstory and how she’s got to where she is and that really carried me through her journey, having those specific things that people watching might never know. I researched what a post-apocalyptic world might look like for humans and the people that have already prepared for something like that and I think that definitely helped instil the fear of Mae’s circumstance. But even just being out in Australia and so far from home and not knowing anyone there definitely helped playing her, Mae is very alone in this world.

What are you most excited for audiences to discover when they watch this film in theaters?

Well, I can’t tell you that. But there are definitely surprises throughout. It will keep you on your toes!
