Ever since Katie Holmes left "Dawson’s Creek" and started fooling around with hubby Tom Cruise, her movie role choices haven’t exactly been all too spectacular. With the exception of Batman Begins and Thank You for Smoking, Holmes has remained relatively quiet on the movie front – taking on a part in a Broadway show last year, while co-starring in the less-than-stellar all-female heist comedy Mad Money.

Now, though, it looks like the gal is not only ready to return to the big screen – but she’s also itching to get her freak on. Variety tells us that Holmes has signed on to star in the Miramax Films thriller Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, which itself is based on a 1973 ABC telepic about a young girl, who, along with her father and his girlfriend, move into a house haunted by devilish creatures.

Don’t let the words "1973 ABC telepic" scare you, though, as Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, The Hobbit) is producing, while Del Toro’s protégé and comic book artist Troy Nixey makes his directorial debut. Holmes, who also has a film coming out called The Extra Man, will most likely play the father's girlfriend although her role is not specified.

So who’s a Katie Holmes fan out there? You think this is the right film for her, or does the gal belong in something less horror-ish?
