Depp to Team with Real-Life Lover in 'My American Lover'
Somewhere in between sailing off for another adventure with those Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp will team up with his real-life lover of 12 years, Vanessa Paradis, on a new film called My American Lover. On what the project is about, Depp said, "It’s in preparation. It's called My American Lover. Vanessa plays the French feminist Simone de Beauvoir and I play her lover Nelson Algren who is real macho."
A 20th century French writer, philosopher and social theorist, Simone de Beauvoir was famous for her essays and metaphysical novels like She Came to Stay and The Mandarins, as well as the 1949 treatise The Second Sex, a detailed analysis of women’s oppression. Much of her intense love affair with Algren was detailed in A Transatlantic Love Affair: Letters to Nelson Algren, a book existing of over 300 letters that de Beauvoir wrote to Algren.
Up until this point, Paradis has really only starred in French films, and this would be her first collaboration with Depp, who may speak French in the film as well (depending on who makes it and how far they want to go with it). Meanwhile, in other Depp news, production on The Tourist(co-starring Angelina Jolie) just began.
Angelina Jolie Adapting Serena with Darren Aronofsky?
Wait, did someone mention Angelina Jolie? Indeed I did. While she gets to work with Depp on The Tourist, news has come via The Hollywood Reporter that Jolie and director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) are in discussions to adapt Ron Rash’s novel Serena for the big screen.
Set in 1929, Serena is a There Will be Blood-type period piece about a couple who move from Boston to North Carolina to build out their timber empire. Sounds chipper enough … until I mention all the violence and mayhem that ensues out there in the wilderness when the couple begin killing anyone and everyone who gets in their way of success. Sounds delightful, don’t you think?
