It's been two years now since J.J. Abrams successfully rebooted the Star Trek franchise to the tune of $358 million worldwide and since then there's been much speculation over when the sequel would hit theaters and what it would be about. Though tentatively scheduled for a June 29, 2012 release, Abrams spoke a little about the sequel while promoting his upcoming sci-fi collaboration with Steven Spielberg, Super 8, which opens in theaters this Friday.

The director confirmed that Star Trek 2 will indeed be the next movie he works on, though he also touched on the release date saying that he'd rather the movie be good than rushing to meet a studio deadline. The director said, "I'm obviously doing everything I can to make sure that schedules don't get screwed up. But I don't think anyone wants a movie on time that's not worth your time."
Another question surrounding the pic is whether it will be shot or converted into 3D. Abrams said he's not considering it, but that he hasn't received any phone calls from the "people in suits." The 3D trend has been on somewhat of a decline this year. Of the ten films that have grossed over $100 million domestically, two are animated 3D flicks (Rio, Kung Fu Panda 2), with the other two being live-action flicks in 3D (Pirates 4 and Thor).
So what do you think? Should Star Trek 2 go where no Star Trek has gone before – into the third dimension?
