Lauren Shuler Donner, producer on the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that the studio is considering which characters will get their own stand-alone movies in the future. Perhaps the most intriguing possibility is ’s Mystique.
While the blue-skinned beauty isn’t at the top of fans’ wishlist -- she’s slotted behind Deadpool, Gambit, X-Force and Storm according to a recent poll -- that could change after the new film debuts on May 23. Mystique plays a pivotal part in the upcoming time-travel story that could leave fans hankering for more.
The studio hasn’t revealed any plans for new spin-off features to date (it announced the next X-Men film is set for 2016, while a third Wolverine is slated for 2017), but that could change quickly. Mystique makes sense, given that she’s portrayed by one of the hottest young actresses working today (Hollywood loves synergy, and Lawrence brings that – girls who love her in The Hunger Games would almost assuredly turn out to see her in a stand-alone Mystique film, while the comic crowd would too), and she’s an interesting character, as producer-writer Simon Kinberg points out:
“I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”
If Marvel’s willing to consider doing a stand-alone Black Widow film, then Mystique seems viable as well. Given Marvel’s crowded release schedule and plans that reportedly span through 2028, there’s a chance Mystique might even get her own movie before Johansson’s character.
What do you think? Would you show up for a Mystique movie, or is the character best served by staying in the ensemble format?
