Is this R2-D2's cousin?
RD-D2 rolled into movie history in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. He was first sighted with Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) but the astromech droid soon joined with his longtime companion C-3PO on a series of lively adventures. The two mechanical friends have appeared in all seven Star Wars movies so far.
But RD-D2 is far from the only droid to appear in the series and one of the pleasures for fans is to spot new droids in each movie. For example, the astromech droid BB-8 became a big hit, thanks to his key role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
What about the first spin-off movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? According to the latest edition of The Star Wars Show (below), we can look forward to seeing C2-B5 (top left), an astromech droid that looks like a cousin, or maybe even brother, of R2-D2.
The show's host says that "as an Imperial droid, C2 requires periodical memory wipes to ensure loyalty," per The Hollywood Reporter, which suggests that specific requirement may "play into the Rebellion's plans to steal data [about the Death Star] from the Empire."
We'll have to wait to see how important C2-B5 proves to be, but at least now we know to look out for the little guy. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will launch into theaters on December 16.
