News poured in last week when it was announced that Megan Fox would not be returning to the Transformers franchise for the third installment. Word on the street has it that her relationship with director Michael Bay was just too dysfunctional – made even worse by the war of words the two had a couple months after Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hit theaters. Is her departure a real blow to the franchise? Not really, in my opinion, since it was never really about the human characters to begin with.
That said, Bay wants this third installment to be more about the human characters, and so leaving folks hanging when it comes to the relationship between Sam and Mikaela that they developed over the course of two films is kind of sad and a little annoying. Then again, I'm sure a few hefty set pieces and a new, beautiful replacement should help silence the naysayers.
First word came through that Gemma Arterton was going to replace Fox, but that was squashed rather quickly. Now, Geek Week reports that Victoria's Secrets model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley will fill in Fox's shoes as Sam's (Shia LaBeouf) new girlfriend. Honestly, the move wouldn't surprise me. Fox's role was never anything more than window dressing to begin with – a hot, scantily clad chick they can toss on posters to sell to the geeks of the world – and so replacing her with a Victoria's Secret model and not an actual established actress who could add some dramatic weight to the role is a move that we'd expect Michael Bay to make.
