Astronaut Matthew McConaughey leads an outer space mission to save mankind in Interstellar, out in theaters this week. Indeed, outer space can be a wonderful place, according to some movies. But, if you've seen a lot of horror movies, you know interstellar missions can also be incredibly terrifying.
Apollo 18 (2011)
The official story is that Apollo 18 was canceled (along with Apollo 19 and Apollo 20), leaving Apollo 17 as the final manned mission to the moon. But this movie suggests otherwise, claiming to reveal recently discovered footage of the ill-fated mission that is quite horrifying.
Pandorum (2009)
Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster awaken on an apparently empty spaceship with no memory of how they got there. As their memories return, they learn that they are not alone. Unfortunately for them, the other inhabitants of the ship have developed an appetite for human flesh... and they are quite hungry.
Doom (2005)
Dwayne Johnson leads a military rescue mission after a research facility on Mars is attacked by a deadly and mysterious creature. The mission quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival, as can be seen by the photo of Rosamund Pike above.
Jason X (2001)
How on earth did the notorious serial killer Jason Voorhees end up in space? Blame the U.S. government (in the future), and unsuspecting students, who, thinking he's dead, accidentally set him free to kill again on a spaceship.
Pitch Black (2000)
Convicted criminal Riddick (Vin Diesel) is on his way to prison, but escapes when the spaceship crash-lands on a distant planet. It turns out the planet is inhabited by nasty little photosensitive creatures, forcing Riddick to work with the other survivors in a daring gambit to stay alive.
Event Horizon (1997)
Laurence Fishburne leads a rescue mission for the titular spaceship, which went missing years before. They find the ship but no survivors, and when the crew -- plus ship designer Sam Neill, above -- are forced to stay on board the craft, they are forced to experience the horrors that await inside.
Screamers (1995)
Unnerving and unsettling, this film examines the consequences of an armed conflict between two opposing groups on a desolated planet far from Earth. Peter Weller commands the resistance group, which faces an implacable foe: an army of deadly, artificially intelligent machines.
Alien (1979)
In the ultimate marriage of horror and science fiction, the hapless crew of a spaceship is decimated, one by one, as an alien creature does what it does best: kill things dead.
