Date-night movies – what does that actually mean? For instance, women who are in love with love may think a romantic comedy will lead to some serious snuggling, while other couples love to cling and clutch during a scary movie. What is clear is that summer has been full tilt for two months and you and your sweetie definitely need a date night… maybe not to Minions, but to a film where no one in the theater will loudly declare they have to "go potty." Here are this month’s picks:
For Couples Who Want to Make Out Like Teenagers: Sinister 2
Did you know teen girls are one of the top viewer demographics of scary movies? High schoolers know nothing bonds them closer to their friends than “surviving” a horror film together… and nothing gives them a better opportunity for some intense hand holding than experiencing two hours of fright night. In theaters August 21.
For Couples Who Want “Enlightenment” on the Female Psyche:
Guys, you only THINK women talk a lot. Trainwreck is proof of just how much we DON’T say… to you. In the film, Amy Schumer shares our girl secrets in the most hilarious way! Many of the little details aren’t just the Amy experience but the female experience, so the louder she snorts the more true it is. To prove this Judd Apatow-directed rom-com is equally entertaining to men, it’s set in the sports world and LeBron James' comedic performance will have you in stitches. And women, here’s an added bonus: you’ll look like an amazing catch next to Schumer’s disaster serial dater.
For Couples Who Like their Superheroes to Be Gender, Age and Racially Balanced: Fantastic Four.
Batman, Superman, the Avengers – they’re all a little, um, old? I love a good fantasy as much as the rest, and being that I’m in my 40s, there’s something exciting to me that most of our big-name superheroes were also free to be as kids. But, it’s a little troublesome how few superchicks and heroes of color have made to the big screen… so, it’s about time crime fighting became more equitable, including giving the twentysomethings a chance to right the world’s wrongs. In theaters August 7.
For Couples Who Need Affirmation They Made Good Choices: Ricki and the Flash.
In our celebrity-driven country, the highest echelon of cool is "rock star." Who wouldn’t trade in their nine-to-five, packing school lunches, and driving a fuel-efficient four door for a life of private jets, exclusive parties across the world and the enviable position of everyone wanting to BE YOU? As this Meryl Streep vehicle proves, the trade-off can be costly because it can be pretty tough to have your cake and have your family eat it, too. In theaters August 7.
For Couples Whose Hearts Race for Each Other:
Choice One: Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation. Spy organization versus spy organization, based on a 1960s TV series. In theaters July 31.
Choice Two: The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Spy organization teams up with spy organization to fight another spy organization., based on a 1960s TV series. In theaters August 14.
Whether or not you remember either of these 1960s spy TV series is irrelevant, it’s nonstop action! Mystery, suspense and insane stunts are enough to engage your minds and get your hearts pounding. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. promises men car chases and fist fights and women get stylistic cinema with suave and sexy secret agents. As for M:I 5, watching 53-year-old father of three Tom Cruise REALLY cling to the outside of a plane in flight is enough to make me squeeze the hand of my babe.
Choice Three: American Ultra.
Perhaps creating a new genre, the stoner romantic action-comedy, American Ultra is about a former government operative whose memory was wiped, but not his skill set. When he’s targeted for elimination by the CIA, he steps up to save his girlfriend. Awwww! It’s violent AND sweet! In theaters August 21.
For Couples Who Want to Change the World with Music: Straight Outta Compton.
Rappers NWA impacted the lives of many music-loving '80s teens. The OGs said things people don’t say and did things people don’t do, showing Gen X a reason to stop slacking and start rebelling against the establishment. This film is guaranteed to regenerate forgotten memories and for couples who’ve been together for a while, the film creates an opportunity learn something new about your partner. In theaters August 14.
