Today sees the DVD and Blu-ray release of the rather unfairly maligned
Green Lantern, which got a bad rap early on thanks to some early trailers and a critical drubbing. And okay, when compared to Thor or Captain America it falls short--but compared to the excruciating X-Men First Class, GL takes the cake. People, forget what the critics said and go in with the mindset that it's a superhero movie, not Oscar bait. Ryan Reynolds as the green-suited Hal Jordan adds a light, refreshing touch to what has lately become a more and more morose genre full of Grumpy Gusses. Keep an eye out too for Peter Sarsgaard, always so delectably awful playing a villain, as Green Lantern's nemesis Hector Hammond.
Extras: Previews of the Justice League comic book and Green Lantern animated series (DVD/BD); the BD offers tons more including an extended cut, additional scenes, the featurettes "Ryan Reynolds Becomes Green Lantern" and "The Universe According to Green Lantern" (a 20-minute chronicle of the people who make the print comic), and Maximum Movie Mode (picture-in-picture features and commentary). There's also a 3D version available that doesn't include the extended cut, however.
Exclusive Clip: Check out an exclusive clip about the making of the comic books.
What's This About UltraViolet? Green Lantern becomes Warner Bros.' second release this week (the first was Horrible Bosses on Tuesday) to offer the new UltraViolet cloud format, meaning you can watch the movie on any number of mobile devices--tablet, smartphone, desktop, TV, game console, what have you. The UltraViolet copy is of the 2D theatrical version of the film, without any of the special features, and includes streaming capability and up to three downloads that will be accessible for a three-year period--the redemption code won't expire until October 14, 2013. Up to six household members can use a single UV library. (Compare all this to iTunes, which only allows you to watch on one device.)
