Summer movies often cater to the younger set, with kids clamoring to see their favorite characters on the big screen. But this month, there are a few films that may also lure dads craving a dose of nostalgia, a few laughs or just an action-packed adrenaline rush. Check out these four flicks to plan a great movie night out (or in) with dad.
Rated: PG-13
Release: August 1, 2014
Based on the Marvel comic book of the same name, pilot/outlaw Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) steals a mysterious orb, becomes the object of a manhunt and leads a quirky band of renegades on the outer space mission of a lifetime. It’s a race against time and scary intergalactic villains to save the world.
The draw for dads: An unbeatable duo: sci-fi plus comic books. Marvel men get the opportunity to geek out in the best possible way with this big-screen adaptation. Dad will delight in this adventure/sci-fi action flick that also comes with a great sense of humor and a kicking soundtrack.
Rated: PG-13
Release: August 8, 2014
The four amphibious warriors are back and bigger than ever with a cast including Johnny Knoxville, Megan Fox and Will Arnett. This time, Shredder and his clan wreak havoc on Manhattan, leading the Turtles to try and save the city before it’s lost forever.
The draw for dads: Director Michael Bay equals explosive action. Need we say more? Just exercise caution, dads. The heavy-hitting action scenes could prove too intense for tiny Turtle fans who love the cartoons and want to come along. If this remake has dad reminiscing about his own early “heroes in a half shell” days, he can grab a pizza when the action’s over and enjoy the Turtles’ favorite snack for a memorable end to the evening out.
Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary
Rated: PG
Release: August 29, 2014
This retro family favorite hits theaters again this summer for a special showing to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Sony has digitally restored and remastered the 1984 movie following our favorite quirky unemployed parapsychology professors as they face off against ghosts and other ghoulish creatures haunting New York City.
The draw for dads: Who you gonna call? Bill Murray! Dads who love Murray’s silly and irreverent humor will get a kick out of introducing the kids to him as well as funnymen Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. All this, combined with ghost battling and slime galore create the perfect recipe for a dad feature.
Need for Speed
Rated: PG-13
DVD/VOD release: August 5, 2014
Underground car races, prison time and a legion of bounty hunters are all in a day’s work for Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame. Paul plays street racer Tobey Marshall, who joins a dangerous and illegal cross-country race with the fastest car from his shop to seek revenge.
The draw for dads: Zoom Zoom. With high-paced action and fast cars, motorhead dads and teens will love sharing the Need for Speed in this thriller. This fast-moving plot will have dads clamoring for more as they live out their race car dreams from the comfort of their own home.
