Mad Max: Fury Road! Will Smith! Spy! Sylvester Stallone! The 2016 Golden Globe nominations are in, and we've got ourselves a very interesting race this year -- one fueled by a mix of dramas, comedies and epic action extravaganzas.
If there's one movie that might be breaking away from the pack, it could be Carol. The drama, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara as two women who crush hard on each other in the early 1950s, leads all contenders with five nominations, followed by The Big Short, The Revenant and Steve Jobs with four, and The Danish Girl, The Hateful Eight, Spotlight, The Martian and Room with three each.
The biggest surprises? How about Will Smith (Concussion) squeezing his way into the Best Actor race instead of Johnny Depp (Black Mass)? How about Sly Stallone nabbing a Best Supporting nod for Creed? And high fives for Mad Max: Fury Road nabbing a Best Picture nomination! The fan favorite has definitely been gaining some attention this awards season, but a big nomination for both the film and George Miller (Best Director) is a good sign it'll slide into the Oscar race, too.
Snubs? We're lookin' at you, Spotlight. The year's most talked-about ensemble is taking a hit so far this awards season, with all its dudes getting shut out of SAG and now the entire cast gets shut out of Golden Globe nods. Meanwhile, The Big Short continues to impress voters more, as both Christian Bale and Steve Carell wound up with nods in the Best Supporting Actor category.
Perhaps the biggest winner, though, is Alicia Vikander, whose huge year on the big screen earned the actress two nominations -- one for Best Actress in The Danish Girl and another for Best Supporting Actress in Ex Machina (pictured below).
And while they likely won't be nominated for Oscars, it's great to see both Trainwreck and Spy recognized in the comedy section (not to mention stars Amy Schumer and Melissa McCarthy for Best Actress, Comedy). How about that? Actual funny comedies actually nominated for Best Picture (Musical/Comedy)!
Check out the nominations below. The 2016 Golden Globe Awards will once again be hosted by Ricky Gervais and air live on NBC on January 10.
