The warmth of summer casts a relaxing spell on most of us, which affects the kind of movies we want to watch. That's true for horror movie fans too -- what's not to like about scary movies that mix fun and sexy elements with sometimes-silly, sometimes chilling frights? Here are some examples of the type of darkly-comic horror movies we're talking about.
Zombeavers (2014)
Three young women head off to a cabin in the woods for a little "girls only" time, but their libidos prompt them to welcome a visit from their male companions, which leads to sexy times when the sun goes down. Sadly, the good times come to an end when they are attacked by beavers who have been turned into homicidal maniacs and refuse to stay dead. Eminently silly, the movie is also a lot of fun.
Nurse 3D (2014)
When experienced nurse Paz de la Huerta isn't punishing cheating men by torturing and killing them, she's taking a shower or changing her clothes, which makes new nurse Katrina Bowden so suspicious she starts taking more long, hot showers too. We don't think the filmmakers meant anyone to take this seriously. At least, we hope not -- it's far too ridiculous to be truly scary!
Piranha 3D (2010)
Joe Dante's modest and witty original was transformed into a mordantly funny, extremely bloody, extremely vicious, and often naked movie that reminded everyone that skinnydipping looks very sexy, at least until an army of killer fish show up. Did we mention that the gore is excessive?
Jennifer's Body (2009)
Admittedly, not everyone will find this a "fun" time at the movies, but for those tuned into the same frequency as writer Diablo Cody, the very dark humor is right on target. With Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried providing the heat, there's a little something-something for almost everyone.
Jason X (2001)
Of all the Friday the 13th movies, this installment is the most genuinely, self-consciously funny, thanks to a very clever script by Todd Farmer. Likewise, the sex and nudity is so over-the-top that it can't really be taken straight. Oddly enough, however, the kill scenes are quite effective, enhanced by the film's unusual setting in outer space.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Salma Hayek turns up the heat when she dances onto the stage at a remote club in Mexico. The movie, written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Robert Rodriguez, has already shown its over-the-top intentions, and things get much nuttier -- and much more bloody -- from there. This clip concludes with George Clooney's vivid (and NSFW) description of the show.
