Those who watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine over the weekend will probably agree with me when I say that Deadpool (as played by Ryan Reynolds) was probably the most interesting and thrilling new character introduced. And so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear (from Variety) that 20th Century Fox is already hard at work on a Deadpool spin-off movie with Ryan Reynolds remaining in the lead role. Not surprisingly, the studio would also love for Deadpool to become its own mini-franchise – making it so, at this rate, by the time we hit, say, 2015, we could have loads of X-Men related movies arriving in theaters.
Based on the not-so-hot critical and fan reaction to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I’m not sure that’s a good thing. But hey, 20th Century Fox desperately needs a superhero franchise of their own, and since Fantastic Four didn’t perform so well (a new re-booted version is apparently in the works as we speak), the X-Men universe should help Fox remain "in the game," so to speak. Aside from the Deadpool film, Fox is also staging a Wolverine sequel, a Magneto origins movie and an X-Men: First Class feature. The latter is said to be the first kid-friendly flick to come from the franchise.
What do you think of all these X-Men-related films? Is it too much? Too little? And is there a particular mutant who you feel deserves their own movie?
