Early word of deviations from Max Brooks' popular book and further news of reshoots and ending changes initially alarmed fans of the source material, but this horror action adventure starring Brad Pitt actually exceeded most people's expectations. Pitt plays a U.N. worker tasked with the unenviable mission of trying to slow down a global zombie pandemic that's turning the entire world population into streaming hordes of flesh eaters. Despite its PG-13 rating director Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) managed to shoot it so you think you see more violence than you actually do. And those streaming, running hordes--zombies on a plane! Zombies piling high over the walls of Jersulem!--are pretty f'ing terrifying. What the film lacks in character development and source material faithfulness it makes up for with sheer spectacle and escapist fun.
