I know what you're probably thinking: How many Wizard of Oz movies is Hollywood planning on shelling out because it feels like a gazillion? My answer: I have no idea, but I'd prepare for a whole bunch. This particular one is called Surrender Dorothy, and it's been around since 2002 when Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) wrote a script that was to star Drew Barrymore as the great-great granddaughter of Dorothy. The details are a little scarce, but apparently this great-great granddaughter must break out the ruby slippers in order to protect Oz and Earth from the Wicked Witch of the West.

Drew Barrymore

Yeah, I thought she melted too, but maybe they found a way to bring her back to life, or maybe she also has a great-great granddaughter – who knows – either way, Pajiba now reports that Barrymore has resurrected the project and is attached to direct, making it her follow-up to Whip It. Not for nothing, but when the second film you direct is a sequel to one of the most beloved films of all time … I gotta say there's some pressure there.

Why the sudden interest in Oz? Well, I think it all has to do with Alice in Wonderland, and how Tim Burton was able to put a new re-imagined spin on a classic story while making boatloads of money at the box office. One would assume this Oz sequel would be in 3D, but then again, that's asking a lot from the second-time director.

What do you think? Is Drew Barrymore the right person to be directing a Wizard of Oz sequel?
