This weekend, Disney releases the sequel to its live-action Alice in Wonderland remake, which remains one of the highest grossing movies of all time. The studio also just dropped a teaser for its live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, which became the most viewed trailer in a single day ever. So, it makes sense that other potential live-action remakes of Disney animated classics are being discussed right now. The latest, according to Deadline, is for a new take on The Little Mermaid.
The project is in a very early stage, such that the studio isn't even certain it will happen. One of the complications involved is that other mermaid movies based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale are in the works elsewhere. Most notable is a Universal production set to star Chloe Grace Moretz in the title role with Rebecca Thomas directing (taking over after Sofia Coppola's departure) from a Richard Curtis (Love Actually) script. There are two more versions listed on IMDb scheduled for release next year.
Competing movies are a constant issue in Hollywood, as each of the dueling group wishes to be the first out of the gate because the earlier release tend to be the more successful. Disney won the race this year with its live-action remake of The Jungle Book, which has been a massive hit, and that has caused a similar adaptation at Warner Bros. to hold back and do some additional tinkering. Then there was the Snow White race of 2012, which Disney backed out of when it was clear both Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman would beat the studio to theaters. Now, with distance, the studio is developing a live-action Snow White spin-off instead.
So far, however, no other studio has done as well with their live-action fairy-tale movies, particularly those based on stories Disney has done in animated feature form. Warner Bros. bombed with the Peter Pan prequel Pan last year, and while Universal did well enough with Snow White and the Huntsman a few years back, its new sequel, The Huntsman: Winter's War, has been a disappointment at the box office. Disney is now also currently working on a new live-action Peter Pan movie of its own.
Therefore, Disney might be able to be ahead of the pack regardless of when its Little Mermaid arrives. Not only does the studio have the best association with the story already, but it has also already had a hit with a live-action mermaid movie in 1984's Splash -- which also spawned a less-memorable made-for-TV sequel in 1988.
