Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the latest addition to Disney's parade of animated movies heading to the big screen as live-action spectacles. Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) is in negotiations to write the screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Released in 1938, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first animated feature produced by Walt Disney and was a huge success, both critically and financially. Inspired by the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, the film follows Snow White as she hides out from a jealous queen with a small group of dwarfs in their forest home.

The original featured eight songs, including "Whistle While You Work," "Heigh Ho" and "Someday My Prince Will Come." The new version will include new songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, Hugh Jackman's upcoming The Greatest Showman on Earth).

As beautiful as the original movie still looks, the gender politics have long been outdated. Two recent versions presented more modern takes on the story. The lighthearted Mirror Mirror starred Julia Roberts as the jealous queen with Lily Collins as Snow White and Armie Hammer as a prince who was far different than Disney's version.
 

Snow White and the Huntsman jettisoned the musical numbers, developing a darker, action-oriented tale starring Kristen Stewart as an updated Snow White opposite Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs joins Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, The Lion King and Aladdin on Disney's slate of upcoming live-action fairy-tale movies. We're eager to see how it turns out.
