I know what you're thinking: How in the world is it that the director of Fight Club, Se7en and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button attaches himself to a movie about Facebook? Unfortunately, I don't really have an answer for you, except to say that according to Variety Fincher is in "advanced talks" to direct The Social Network, based on a script by Aaron Sorkin. The film will chronicle the social networking site from its college campus origins in 2004 through today.
Sounds quite boring and not all too cinematic, right? But hang on – according to Slashfilm, the movie will be based on Ben Mezrich's (who wrote the book Bringing Down the House, which later became the quirky-cool card-counting flick 21) upcoming book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook – A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal. Um, whoa – now we're talking!
The book hits shelves on July 14th, and over on Amazon Kevin Spacey (who's producing the movie) wrote a review that says, in part, "You may think you know the story of the Facebook phenomenon, but you haven't heard the whole story and never like this. Recreating the unbelievable rise of the world's biggest social network—not to mention the planet's youngest billionaire, Mark Zuckerberg—Ben tells a captivating story of betrayal, vast amounts of cash, and two friends who revolutionized the way humans connect to one another—only to have an enormous falling out and never speak again."
Are you beginning to have second thoughts now about this so-called Facebook movie? I'm thinking it could be pretty cool indeed …
