Dan Aykroyd Talks 'Ghostbusters 3' and Chevy Chase Talks About a New 'Vacation' Movie

If you feel like we’ve been listening to Dan Aykroyd and company talk about Ghostbusters 3 for years, it’s because we have. The project has dragged on for ages, with Bill Murray being the main holdup. Murray is holding out for a script up to his standards (when he’s not busy just ignoring the franchise talk in general), but now Aykroyd says they’re ready to move ahead – with or without the cantankerous (and hilarious) star.

 

Aykroyd appeared on The Dennis Miller Show (hat tip to Coming Soon for sharing) and dropped the following bombshell on listeners.

 

“Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray. That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that Ghostbusters is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of Ghostbusters 3 is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood."

 

Honestly, after this announcement – which features the double whammy of potentially dropping Murray (who, honestly, doesn’t need the gig…) and highlighting that this is a “passing the torch” movie – we almost hope this project just dies and fades away. We got one great movie and a so-so sequel out of the Ghostbusters franchise – please just spare us watching you hand the series over to a new generation of stars who have no clue what made the films so iconic in the first place. Go out with a little dignity, guys.

 

Meanwhile, Collider caught up with Chevy Chase yesterday – and the Community star shared some news about projects he’s working on.

 

While there has been talk of a Vacation reboot in the works at Warner Bros., Chase surprised everyone with the following revelation: He’s been working on his own script, with the help of co-star Beverly D’Angelo.

 

“I’ve written an idea that would be basically like a “Swiss Family Griswold.” There’s a cruise, there’s a fire on the ship, we think the whole ship’s on fire and we jump—it’s just a little fire—and we end up on an island where we meet Randy somewhere who’s been left there from an old Survivor series. I like that idea. It’s hard to sell these things to the Warners people. It depends on who’s there and what their mood is and what they think people are gonna like.”

 

We may be jumping the gun here, but we’d pay to see that movie right now – forget about Warners’ planned reboot focusing on the adventures of son Rusty.

 

Chase also took a moment to talk about one of his other classic roles, investigative journalist Irwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher. Rumors have circulated for years that a reboot of the franchise was in the works – but Chase isn’t interested in that. As he sees it, there’s no reason he can’t play the role again – and he’s actually right.

 

“I mean look, I’m not gonna do Fletch unless I’m Fletch, if they start writing something for a kid who’s Fletch and I’m just helping out, “Bye.” I mean, there’s no reason why, at my age, I can’t still be Fletch. I’ve always been getting this impression that they’d like me to be mentoring a younger Fletch type thing. No, what am I James Coburn on a Western? No. Nothing against James Coburn, he’s great. Is he alive? Yeah I think he is. I think he’s very much alive.”

 

We feel the same way, Chevy – you’re always Fletch as far as we’re concerned.
