Colin Trevorrow Chris Pratt Bryce Dallas Howard Jurassic World

After Colin Trevorrow parted ways with Lucasfilm last year, J.J. Abrams stepped in to replace him at the helm of Star Wars: Episode IX. As a result of that directorial shift, the Star Wars sequel trilogy was started and will be finished by the same filmmaker. Now, the Jurassic Park sequel trilogy -- aka the Jurassic World trilogy -- is doing the same, and for this one, Trevorrow is the bookending talent.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Trevorrow will direct Jurassic World 3, which was recently confirmed and scheduled for a 2021 release. He helmed Jurassic World, which surprised everyone to become one of the most successful movies of all time, worldwide. For the follow-up, he slipped back into writing and producing positions since he had a Star Wars movie to make, and the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom went to J.A. Bayona. Now he's returning to full captain status to continue the series.

Jurassic World 3 probably won't actually be the final installment, even if it does close out a second trilogy of sorts. We don't know which of the franchise's characters will even be returning for the next part. Last month, we did learn that Trevorrow and his writing partner, Derek Connolly, already came up with the story for the sequel, while Trevorrow and Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim: Uprising) are now working on the screenplay.

Steven Spielberg is returning as executive producer. He was the source of the news, as told to EW. The Ready Player One director has long been a champion of Trevorrow, who was also tapped to join Spielberg and his Amblin Entertainment as a writer and producer (along with Connolly) of Rebecca Thomas' forthcoming sci-fi comedy Intelligent Life. Regular Jurassic producer Frank Marshall is also coming back for the next installment.

Nothing is known yet of the movie's plot, of course. We don't even know how Fallen Kingdom will wind up in the end. We'll find that out when the first Jurassic World follow-up hits theaters on June 22, while Jurassic World 3 won't arrive until almost three years later, on June 11, 2021.
