The original Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was a surprise hit, adapting a popular children’s book into a $243 million win for Sony’s fledgling animation arm. A sequel seemed inevitable, but which direction would Cloudy 2 go now that inventor Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) had saved his seaside town from culinary chaos?

The latest trailer spells out the sequel’s plot, which involves a trip to Swallow Falls so that Flint, Sam (Anna Farris) and several familiar characters from the first movie can prevent an army of food-based monsters from reaching our hero’s homeland. “It’s so beautiful,” Sam exclaims… though you know this is just a delicious Jurassic Park-type island ready to explode into flavor-ific terror!

Audiences likely will be able to watch Cloudy 2 multiple times without catching all of the food-related creatures codirectors Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn packed into the colorful frames of this sequel. Take note, though. Original codirectors Phil Lord and Chris Miller did not return, choosing instead to work on the LEGO movie and, eventually, 22 Jump Street. Does this mean the Cloudy sequel already has lost a step?

At least the bulk of the voice cast is back in place, from Hader and Farris to Andy Samberg and James Caan. New voices added to the mix include Neil Patrick Harris, Will Forte and Benjamin Bratt, who can be heard on-screen this weekend in the animated sequel Despicable Me 2.

This full trailer helps sell the Cloudy sequel as a colorful and wildly imaginative second adventure with characters we grew to love. Expect families to pack the theaters when Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 opens everywhere on Friday, September 27. And be sure to read our own Erik Davis' report from a recent Cloudy press day, where he called the sequel "this year's most inventive monster movie!"
