The first word that comes to mind when trying to describe Cloud Atlas has to be “massive.” The sprawling adaptation of David Mitchell’s 2004 novel interconnects seven storylines that span centuries, taking audiences as far back in time as the 1850s and as far forward as an undetermined future, where post-apocalyptic warriors cross brutal terrains to complete a vital mission.
And now, the word “massive” takes on a new meaning, as Warner Bros. revealed that Cloud Atlas – co-directed by Tom Tykwer and the Wachowski siblings – will be digitally converted to IMAX for its Oct. 26 release date. EW.com confirmed the announcement late Monday evening.
“Trailblazing filmmakers Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis understand how to transport moviegoers through ground-breaking imagery and scale,” said Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “We’re excited to build on our partnerships with Warner Bros. and the filmmakers and present this epic tale in IMAX.”
According to the release, the film (which was not filmed using IMAX cameras) will digitally remaster its imagery to accommodate the larger IMAX projection screens. And if there’s a movie on the horizon that’s worth seeing in IMAX, it’s Cloud. The directors pour countless details into every frame, and John Toll and Frank Griebe’s cinematography – particularly in a neo-futuristic Korea – will blow you away.
Cloud Atlas stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Bae Doo-na and many, many more. It will be available in 2D as well come Oct. 26, but for those who want to travel around this Atlas in IMAX, you now have that option.
