In the movie A Dog’s Purpose, the devoted soul of a dog (voiced by Josh Gad) lives many lifetimes in the forms of many adorable dog breeds in a search to discover the meaning of his own existence.

In the spirit of the movie, here's how to make your own unique doghouse cookies. They can be decorated any way you like, to reflect the style of your own beloved pup. Various colored sprinkles and icings give each cookie its own flair.  You can even add a little icing bone to welcome the dog home.

A Dog’s Purpose Doghouse Cookies

You’ll need:

Doghouse cookie cutter

3-1/4 -inch round biscuit cutter

Red icing

White icing

Green sprinkles

Various colored sprinkles

Jumbo Heart sprinkles

Ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Pinch of salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

½ sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter, sugar and brown sugar until combined.

Add the egg and vanilla, then slowly add in the dry ingredients until the dough comes together.

The dough will form quickly, and when it starts to pull away from the bowl, it’s ready.

Split the dough into two and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill until you are ready to use.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with Silpats.

Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thick. Use a doghouse cutter to cut out the shapes. For each doghouse, cut out a corresponding circle for its base. Transfer the cut out dough onto the prepped baking sheets.

Bake for 10 minutes, let cool on a wire rack.

Once the cookies are cool, use a #7 tip and red icing to run parallel lines across the front of the doghouse. Use a #10 tip and white icing for the roof eaves. Dip the eaves into different colored sprinkles to give each doghouse a signature look. Add a red heart sprinkle at the top of each house. Let the icing dry.

While the doghouse icing is drying, work on the bases. Use an offset spatula and white icing to cover the circle cookie. Dip into the green sprinkles to create grass. Add a little white dog bone if you desire.

Once the icing is dry, pipe icing on the bottom edge of the doghouse to prop up onto the base. If you are having trouble keeping it steady, add a piece of candy or cookie as a back support, keeping it in place with more icing.

When all the icing is dry, the cookies are ready to serve.
