Though Eagle Eye's D.J. Caruso was originally tapped to direct an adaptation of Jack the Giant Killer for the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter now tells us that Bryan Singer has stepped in and replaced him for reasons unknown. Singer, who's taken a bit of a break since the debut of his action-thriller Valkyrie, has signed onto three different films recently – all of which have sci-fi fantasy elements (cool!), and none of which involve the Man of Steel (bummer!).
THR notes that Jack the Giant Killer will most likely be his next project since its being fast-tracked, while Singer's feature-length Battlestar Galactica movie and his remake of Excalibur are still lingering around the womb, waiting for more nutrients to be added. I have a bit of a personal connection to Jack the Giant Killer since I played Jack in my third grade play…though something tells me Singer and Co. might want someone with a little more experience to lead their big-screen effort (but know that my door is always open, Mr. Singer!).
In this version of Jack the Giant Killer (written by Live Free or Die Hard scribe Mark Bomback), a long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened when a princess is taken hostage, leading a young farmer to head off to the dangerous giants' kingdom in an attempt to win her freedom. No word on a release date, though the intense special effects work needed would suggest this to hit theaters at some point in 2011.
