The 2010 summer moviegoing season is in full swing, with Shrek Forever After leading the box office surge last weekend (taking in a respectable, but not earth-shattering $71 million), and now we're approaching one of the biggest weekends of summer: Memorial Day weekend. The three-day holiday weekend has played host to several blockbusters over the years, and 2010 is no different with a couple big heavy hitters entering an already packed marketplace. Let's take a look at this week's competition …
What's The Scoop: Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha are back at it again, two years after the four made their ultra successful transition from the small screen to the big screen. This time they're packing their martinis and stilettos and traveling the globe, making stops in Abu Dhabi for an all-expense-paid extravaganza.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: If there's any film in 2010 where women will have the most amount of impact at the box office, it's this one. They lined up in droves for the first go-round, and they're expected to do the same again, despite the fact that critics haven't been all too kind to the sequel.
What's The Scoop: Based on the popular line of video games, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a prince who was framed for his father's death, and must not only set out to clear his name, but also stop an unruly leader from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: It's Disney, it's Jerry Bruckheimer, and if there's any film that best defines the summer moviegoing experience, it's this one – what with its fantastic visuals, big-budgeted special effects and tremendous supporting cast (including the lovely Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley).
My Prediction: Though Prince of Persia certainly feels like the fan choice and the film that should win the weekend, I can't see anything defeating Sex and the City and its army of loyal fans. So chalk this one up as another win for the ladies from New York.
