This is it! This is the weekend we’ve all been waiting for! (Okay, maybe not all of us. Some of us. Can I say some of us?) As I said earlier in the week, this particular weekend is one so packed with material for everyone that the three movies opening are going to literally battle one another to the death, with the winner just barely making it out alive. I’ll give you the latest numbers from our super terrific Fandango ticket computers in a second, but first – the movies!
What’s The Scoop: Based on the popular Toronto-set comic series, Michael Cera plays a lovable slacker who, in order to win the love of his dream girl (literally) Ramona Flowers, must defeat her seven evil ex boyfriends. Cue a fantastic up-and-coming ensemble cast, and enough video game references to keep you pushing that start button over and over again.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Um, because it’s awesome? No, seriously, it’s a film that packs one heckuva original power combo full of action, excitement, humor and heart. Kids (and especially adults who grew up on those old school video games) will love its fast pace and groovy vibe.
What’s The Scoop: Sylvester Stallone leads a group of mercenaries (and tough 80’s icons) on a mission to South America to overthrow a dictator.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Because this may be the one and only chance you ever get to see Stallone team up with guys like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Steve Austin, Randy Couture and Dolph Lundgren. Oh, and did we mention he also found a way to stick Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger in there too?!
What’s The Scoop: Based on the very successful novel, Julia Roberts stars as a happily married woman trying to get pregnant who decides to get divorced and travel the globe in an attempt to steer her life in a different direction.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: The book has a very loyal fanbase, and with two male-dominated films in theaters alongside it, look for lots of females to line up and take in the comfy, go-for-it-all Julia Roberts movie.
My Prediction: As of right now, Eat Prey Love is leading the pack in advanced ticket sales with 33% to The Expendables’ 27% and Scott Pilgrim’s 24%. Still, that might be because women tend to buy more advanced tickets, and so I wouldn’t exactly call the film a shoe-in to win the weekend. As much as I’d like to see Scott Pilgrim walk away with it all (because it’s the best film here by far), I think The Expendables will ultimately come out on top.
