My first back-to-back loss of the year has me limping in a little late this week, afraid of the beating handed to me by How to Train Your Dragon. If there’s one thing we learned about 3D so far in 2010, it’s that those films have lasting power. If Dragon was released only in 2D, it would’ve fell off the top 3 by now – but it’s hanging in there, chugging along. This week sees two new releases entering the battlefield. Why It Might Win the Weekend: We’ve been anticipating a new Freddy Krueger for awhile now, so regardless of the negative reviews, fans should be flocking to Krueger’s new joint in droves.
What's the Scoop: Brendan Frasier plays a real estate guy who decides to build a housing development, except the animals that already live on that land aren’t having any part of it.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It’s cute, it’s a kids’ movie, and who doesn’t want to watch Brendan Fraser get attacked by a rowdy group of animals?
My Prediction: Part of me wants to go with How to Train Your Dragon, because apparently that dragon is tougher than I thought. But how do you vote against the return of Freddy Krueger? Even if Freddy doesn’t win, I’m way too nostalgic to bet against one of the great horror villains of all time. So, yeah, I’m going with Nightmare on Elm Street for the win.
