Ho ho holy moly there are a lot of movies arriving in theaters over the next few days. This year’s holiday releases will be broken off into three bundles of joy, with one batch in theaters now, one arriving this weekend, and the other cruising in behind Santa Claus on Christmas Day. There’s a lot to go over, so let’s just jump in and get those sleigh bells wet.
Release Date: 12/19
What’s the Scoop: An aspiring inventor (Seth Rogen) brings his overbearing mother (Barbra Streisand) along for a cross-country trip promoting his product. Hilarity – and lots of “Mom, stop doing that!” jokes – ensue.
Release Date: 12/19
What’s the Scoop: It’s just like the Pixar movie we all know and love, except now it’s in 3D. It’s definitely a good way to remind yourself (and your kids) why you love this movie so much since it has a prequel arriving next summer.
Release Date: 12/21
What’s the Scoop: The year wouldn’t feel complete without a few action sequences starring Tom Cruise. Based on the popular series of books, Jack Reacher finds Cruise as an ex-military man who plays by his own rules while investigating a series of murders. Expect him to get to the bottom of it all by punching a lot of people.
Release Date: 12/21
What’s the Scoop: Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles from Knocked Up in this sort-of sequel, written and directed by Judd Apatow, that takes a look at the lives of a married couple as they’re approaching 40. Put the toilet seat down and go enjoy this on the big screen … if you can find a babysitter, that is.
Release Date: 12/25
What’s the Scoop: The new film from Quentin Tarantino is bold, bloody and bad to the bone. Jamie Foxx stars as a slave who teams up with a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) in order to rescue his wife from a ruthless slave owner (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Release Date: 12/25
What’s the Scoop: Based on the beloved musical, director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) returns to the big screen with his version of this epic story of love and redemption, all brilliantly belted out through song by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and more.
Release Date: 12/25
What’s the Scoop: Billy Crystal and Bette Midler star in this cute family comedy about two grandparents who agree to look after their three grandkids when their parents go on a work trip. Needless to say, things do not go as planned.
My Prediction: It’s definitely crowded at the movie theater this holiday season, but we wouldn’t want it any other way. While many of these movies have a chance to break out big, I think it’ll be Les Miserables that eventually pulls away from the pack and winds up with the biggest box-office grosses once we’re finished with all our Christmas leftovers.
My Pick of the Holiday Season: Considering most of you will probably be going to the movies with your families over the next week or so, I’m going to recommend Les Miserables since it really does give you a little bit of everything for everyone. Even your grumpy Uncle will be impressed when Anne Hathaway belts out a tune.
Phew, let’s both congratulate each other for making it this far. Now go vote in our poll below, and let us know which movie(s) you’ll be watching over the holidays.
Merry Everything!
