If it seems like the box office has been quiet the past couple of weeks, fear not Fandango fans because that's all about to change. With The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arriving in theaters this weekend, December is now in full swing. We've got awards to discuss, gifts to obsess over and a handful of very big movies heading our way, beginning with our first trip back to Middle-earth since 2003's The Return of the King.

Just how big will The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey be? Well here's what we know so far: The Lord of the Rings prequel grossed an estimated $13 million in midnight screenings alone, which may not come near the final Harry Potter and The Dark Knight Rises numbers, but for a December release it's stellar. With The Hobbit hitting a record-breaking 4,045 theaters this weekend, it's not hard to envision it breaking records for the best-ever December opening, which currently sits at $77.2 million thanks to Will Smith's I Am Legend.

My Prediction: Taking into consideration the amount of theaters it's in and those numbers from midnight screenings, I'm going to predict The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes in around $88 million for the weekend. I think it'll definitely top I Am Legend, but fall just short of crossing the pivotal $100 million mark.

Now that you've seen my prediction, tell us yours. How much money do you think The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will make at the box office this weekend?
