Though only 21% of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, that still didn't stop people from packing theaters this past weekend in anticipation of what can now be called "Summer's Biggest Sequel", Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. We anticipated a big opening here on Fandango (especially after theaters across the country were reporting multiple sold out shows), but would it be enough to top The Dark Knight's five-day record of $203 million?

Not quite, according to today's numbers. While the Michael Bay-directed film absolutely annihilated the box office – enough to easily give it the best opening of 2009 – the film just barely lost out to last year's box office champion by a measly three million. With $200.1 million, Revenge of the Fallen easily toppled Spider-Man 2's $152.4 million to take the second best five-day opening in history, though The Dark Knight will most likely survive another year with its five-day record of $203 million still in the top spot … unless, ya know, a little boy wizard casts a magic box office spell in a couple weeks from now.

Will Warner Brothers' Potter release date switch gamble pay off, after previously moving Half-Blood Prince from November 2009 to July 2009? Do you think the film has a shot at The Dark Knight's five-day record, or would it have done better opening back in November? Sound off below …
