A few years ago, right before Halloween II hit theaters, Rob Zombie was attached to a remake of the sci-fi/horror classic The Blob, about a gelatinous creature that overtakes an idyllic American town, growing in size with each new person it eats. Immediately fans of the original film groaned, and understandably so, since it was hard to picture Zombie's particular brand of grungy horror working well with the Americana-versus-monster vibe of the original movie.

That version never came to pass. But that doesn't mean the world was spared a remake of The Blob indefinitely. News has hit today that Simon West (Con Air, The Expendables 2) is heading up a new redo of the movie.

We really don't know anything about the new version yet as far as story goes, but this quote from Simon West should be somewhat telling of what kind of movie to expect:

“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”

So, yeah, go ahead and count on a big, CGI mass swallowing up a bunch of people. That means it won't have the vintage, B-movie, creature-feature charm of the original. And it certainly won't have the incredibly, practical gore effects that Chuck Russell's '80s remake did. That doesn't mean it'll be horrible, of course, but we do hope they don't skimp on the CGI budget and deliver some half-baked animation-- as is the case with most of the digital work in West's The Expendables 2.
