Well, it's official: As previously rumored, Summit Entertainment has chosen Bill Condon to direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, based on the fourth novel in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. Condon is the critically-acclaimed director behind films like Dreamgirls, Kinsey and Gods and Monsters, and isn't really the first name you'd think of when it comes to the person who should helm the final installment in what could be the most lucrative franchise of the decade.

Bill Condon to direct 'Breaking Dawn'

Summit wanted A-list talent, though, since this will in all likelihood be the last installment in this particular franchise. Plus it's a meaty one, and will be hard to adapt, which is why they wanted someone who has experience with tough material. Condon is a solid director, and I bet the studio also hopes his involvement may automatically make the fourth installment an immediate awards contender. Could you imagine if The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn was nominated for Best Picture?

The most interesting thing about the press release announcing Condon's involvement, though, is that nowhere do they mention Breaking Dawn being a two-parter. We assume the deals for that haven't been worked out yet – then again, if Summit has Oscar gold on the brain, splitting the final film into two parts won't help them land that statue. But it will help them double their money at the box office, and something tells me that might be the most alluring option.
