Barry Levinson’s 1982 dramedy Diner is the latest movie to get the Broadway treatment. The film which helped launch the careers of Mickey Rourke, Ellen Barkin, Steve Guttenber, Daniel Stern, Kevin Bacon and Paul Reiser earned Levinson his second Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay. The movie’s soundtrack boasts an impressive list of artists including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Darin and Fats Domino among others so it only makes sense to have Sheryl Crow would be brought in to write the music for the Broadway version. Wait, what?

Truth be told, using the classic tunes from the aforementioned artists would cost a ton of money to license, so it does make sense to bring in someone to write some new songs. Still, the selection of Crow is an interesting choice considering the movie is about a bunch of directionless, girl-chasing young men in 1950’s Baltimore.

Kathleen Marshall will direct the production for a fall 2012 premiere.

Would you be interested in checking out this Broadway version of Diner or would it be more interesting if Levinson brought the guys back together for a sequel to see where their lives took them?
