From the "news of the day we love" files comes the announcement that Universal has officially greenlit The World's End, the third in director Edgar Wright's trilogy of comedies (aka"The Cornetto Trilogy" or "The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy") starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost that started with Shaun of the Dead back in 2004 and its follow-up, Hot Fuzz, in 2007. Shooting will start in October in the UK from a script Pegg and Frost co-wrote, which quite frankly isn't soon enough for us. 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
Clearly it'll be their comic take on some apocalyptic event, but what, exactly, remains a mystery -- although /Film's writeup on the announcement the film was in the works back in May suggests it may well have to do with an alien invasion (a subject tackled already by Wright's good friend Joe Cornish in last year's terrific Attack the Block), which seems like a fairly obvious way to go.
Did you know?: The trilogy is named after Cornetto ice cream, which appears in each movie: red strawberry represented blood in the zom-com Shaun, the original blue/vanilla represented the police in Fuzz, and World's End will include mint-chocolate chip to represent sci-fi. Hmm, green as in little green Martians? We shall see...
