A lot has already been written about awards season and which films are the top contenders, but there’s still a long ways to go. Before we get to the big awards nominations that much of the world plays attention to (Oscars, Golden Globes), we have several awards handed out by various organizations and critics groups. As of now, we’ve heard from critics groups in New York, LA, Boston and The Broadcast Film Critics Association (with many more on the way), as well as organizations like the National Board of Review (NBR), and the American Film Institute (AFI).
Here are the current frontrunners in the main categories if you go by the voting results from the above groups and organizations:
Best Picture: Zero Dark Thirty (won NBR, New York Film Critics Circle, Boston Society of Film Critics, New York Film Critics Online and listed by AFI)
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln (won NYFCC, NYFCO, BSFC)
Best Actress: Emmanuelle Riva for Amour (won BSFC, NYFCO)
Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty (won NYFCC, NBR, BSFC, NYFCO)
Best Supporting Actor: No one received multiple wins here, so here are all the winners:
Matthew McConaughey (Bernie, Magic Mike) – NYFCC
Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained) – NBR
Dwight Henry (Beasts of the Southern Wild) – LAFCA
Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) – BSFC
Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln) -- NYFCO
Best Supporting Actress: Sally Field for Lincoln (won NYFCC, BSFC)
The Broadcast Film Critics Association was not included in those tallies because they have a nominations process and an awards ceremony on January 11, 2013. Here are their nominees for best picture; you can see their entire list of nominees here.
