Last time I wrote about Angelina Jolie potentially starring in another global chase thriller called The Tourist, I came down on the gal for taking on more of the same boring action roles. Granted, I know most of you would rather watch Jolie sex it up while she swings from buildings and punches the lights out of random baddies – but I think she's a better actress than that, and I'd love to see her take on something with a little more meat on the bone. Or, perhaps, a little more clothing …
Variety now tells us that Jolie is circling a juicy femme fatale role in Ridley Scott's drama Gucci, which will follow the trials and tribulations of the world-famous Gucci family up to and including the murder of Maurizio Gucci, grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. If she takes the part, Jolie would play Patrizia Reggiano, who was sentenced to 29 years in prison for plotting the murder of Maurizio, her ex-husband.
It's all rather soap opera-ish, and it may seem like an odd project for Scott to take, but he did a good job with American Gangster (another period biopic of sorts), which means this could be right in his wheelhouse. As far as who would play opposite Jolie as Maurizio, Variety says that Scott has approached Leonardo DiCaprio, though he has not committed to the role as of yet. If DiCaprio and Jolie star alongside each other in a film about the Gucci family, you're looking at a movie that would surely find its way onto Oscar watch lists prior to it even hitting production. One imagines both stars are waiting on a rewrite of the current script before they decide to join.
