The Alamo Drafthouse has quickly garnered a reputation as one of the greatest movie theaters in the history of mankind…or at least the history of movie theaters. With their signature events, ample food and drink selection, and strict no-talking policy, they make obsolete all tawdry multiplexes and completely redefine the movie-going experience. Here’s what they’re up to this week!

70mm at the Ritz: Ghostbusters

The 70mm series at the Alamo Drafthouse so far has been an absolute revelation for cinephiles. We’ve seen the Sharks and the Jets duke it out on a far bigger battleground than ever before, we’ve seen Indiana Jones’ Last Crusade in heroic detail, and the gorgeous cinematography of Baraka taking on entirely new life. Now we get to what I consider to be the main event: Ghostbusters. The proton packs will feel as if they are zapping and humming right next to you, the Marshmallow Man will seem even taller, and Bill Murray, well, he’ll still be Bill Murray. If you thought bustin’ made you feel good before, don’t miss this rare opportunity to see one of the greatest entrepreneurial comedies of all time in glorious 70mm.

Ladies of the 80s Sing-Along

Last week, it was boy bands that ruled the realm of the sing-along, now it’s time the ladies took over. Once again, the 80s dominated every other decade of the 20th century in pretty much every arena, and female pop divahood is no exception…nor is it a word. Come to the Alamo Mason Park and belt your favorite tunes by Madonna, Blondie, Cydni Lauper, and all the other girls who just want you to have fun at this sing-along.

Master Pancake: Choose Your Own Pancake

If you thought the Master Pancake troupe had a tough job before, mocking movies they’d seen a million times with pitch-perfect comedic timing, wait until you see them mock films they may never have even heard of! Bring your favorite DVD and the Master Pancake gents will narrow them down by audience vote. They will then adlib quips throughout the whole film and even make up a skit on the fly. Holy Whose Line!

Zzang!!!: Revenge of the Nerds

Before 1984, we were unafraid of nerds. We felt free to mock their pocket protectors, their high-water pants, and their awkward social mannerisms with impunity. Then, a little film came along that decidedly turned the tables. Revenge of the Nerds warned us that our unbridled ridicule of nerds bore a heavy price. We realized we were at risk of incurring unspeakable acts of vengeance. Their wrath took the sinister form of electric violins, sex on a moon bounce, and whacky fix-it-up montages. From that point forward, he paid due respect to these intelligent, grudge-holding lunatics. Come enjoy this gem on the big screen. Nerds! Nerds! Nerds!

Cinema Cocktails: Some Like It Hot

Sometimes comedies born in the era of black and white fail to elicit laughs from contemporary audiences due to their dated and/or stuffy material. Some Like It Hot is not among that unfortunate lot. Some Like It Hot is a triumph of sharp-as-a-razor dialogue, farcical mistaken identity, and slapstick. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis operate like a long-standing comedy act and Marilyn Monroe reminds us all why American fell so hard for her. Come down to the Alamo and enjoy a few cocktails while you watch a film that is a classic in every sense of the word. With the characters in Some Like It Hot finding so many innovative ways to surreptitiously drink alcohol, the experience should be perfect.
