The Alamo Drafthouse has quickly garnered a reputation as one of the greatest movie theaters in the history of mankind…or at least the history of movie theaters. With their signature events, ample food and drink selection, and strict no-talking policy, they make obsolete all tawdry multiplexes and completely redefine the movie-going experience. Here’s what they’re up to this week!

The Ultimate Dark Knight Adventure, July 19, 2:45pm

I moved to Austin just before the release of The Dark Knight. I remember the crushing disappointment I felt in not attending the celebratory event the Alamo put together called The Ultimate Dark Knight Adventure. Not only would you get a ticket to the movie, but you’d also get to travel to Bracken Cave to observe millions of actual bats in flight. The Drafthouse is giving us all a second opportunity to pretend to be Bruce Wayne in that iconic, formative scene from Batman Begins. The Hans Zimmer score will inevitably be playing in your head as you watch the flight of the bats. I can’t think of a more perfect way to get in the right mood for The Dark Knight Rises.

Day’s Inn Hillsboro, TX

Rolling Roadshow: Bottle Rocket, July 21, 9:00pm

One of the great things about central Texas is how many different types of movies have been filmed here in some portion or another. Such is the case with Wes Anderson’s debut film Bottle Rocket. A prominent location in the film, the Day’s Inn in Hillsboro is once again teetering on the edge of closing its doors forever, and we simply cannot have that. The Alamo presents a very special screening of the film and encourages you to book a room to help us save this historic cinematic locale.

Alamo Mason Park, Houston

Badass 101: I Come in Peace, July 22, 6:30pm

With The Expendables 2 due out this summer, it’s the perfect time to brush up on what it means to be truly badass. I can think of no better instruction manual for formidable awesomeness than Expendables alum Dolph Lundgren taking on alien dope-pushers in 1990’s I Come in Peace. The premise is simple, and stupid and amazing: an evil extraterrestrial comes to Earth, steals a mountain of cocaine from some gangsters, and injects his victims with said coke to activate/steal chemicals from their brains. Sci-fi, martial arts, and flying CDs! Do I really need to say anymore? This movie is an under seen gem and whether in peace or with hostile intent, you must come to the Drafthouse on July 22.

Alamo Stone Oak, San Antonio, July 23, 7:00pm

Man Crush: The Last of the Mohicans

The Alamo Drafthouse is always tinkering with new and unique film series at their various locations that hit on a wide range of cinematic topics. It’s been a while since a new signature series has intrigued me as much as Man Crush. The idea is simple: male movie characters that are both badass as well as handsome. The kind of heroes who make us pump our fists, while simultaneously raising serious, troubling questions within us that we aren’t ready to deal with. The Avengers think they have the market cornered on fantastic heroes named Hawkeye, but Daniel Day-Lewis’ sharpshooting Native American wonderboy has Renner beat by a mile.

Summer of 1982: Terror Tuesday: Q: The Winged Serpent, July 24, 10:45pm

While all the bigger, better known films featured as part of the Summer of 1982 series are tremendous, there is something to be said for the smaller releases from cinema’s most prolific year. If you like b-movies about ancient Aztec monsters, you’ll probably enjoy Larry Cohen’s Q: The Winged Serpent. Sure, the effects are a little dated and the budget rivals that of most startup children’s lemonade stands, but none of this even registers when Michael Moriarty graces the screen. There has never been an actor quite like Moriarty, and I’d hazard we could make movies for two thousand more years and not see another of his ilk. He’s a raging psychosis distilled into human form and handed a script that he then immediately throws out the window. Watching him unfurl his crazy on the big screen is never something you want to miss.
