The Alamo Drafthouse has quickly garnered a reputation as one of the greatest movie theaters in the history of mankind…or at least the history of movie theaters. With their signature events, ample food and drink selection, and strict no-talking policy, they make obsolete all tawdry multiplexes and completely redefine the movie-going experience. Here’s what they’re up to this week!
Continuing its tribute to the greatness that is Mel Brooks, the Alamo brings us Mel’s phenomenal send-up of Star Wars. Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Joan Rivers, and good ol’ Mel himself all turn in fantastic performances in one of the universe’s greatest spoofs. The Alamo is prepared to bring out your inner Schwartz with noisemakers and food and drink specials that are sure to send your taste buds into orbit.
“After the excitement of Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein at the Alamo in May, we have decided that Austin must really love the theatre. That is why we are excited to return to the HD stage this fall for National Theater Live’s upcoming theatrical bounty. We are starting out this fall with One Man, Two Guvnors. After being fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall seeks employment from Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood. Crabbe is in town to collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s father, but Roscoe isn’t the real Roscoe, but rather his sister Rachel masquerading as her dead brother. The real Roscoe died at the hand of Rachel’s boyfriend Stanley Stubbers who offers Franics Henshall the chance for an extra meal ticket. Now in order to prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart.”—OriginalAlamo.com
“MJ may be gone, but his legend is eternal. This was our very first music video Sing-Along ever, and it’s still one of the best. Because, as we know, Michael didn’t make music videos, he made short films. Say, say, say what you want, but we’ll be getting our Thriller on, asking Annie if she’s okay, and rocking with you all night. If you’ve never been to one of The Action Pack’s Sing-Alongs before, this is the show to get started with. We’ll have a moonwalking contest before the show, select members of every audience will get flashlights to shine around the room every time Michael lights up a piece of sidewalk during "Billie Jean," and when they dance under the water from the fire hydrant during T"he Way You Make Me Feel," we’ll make you feel the spray But be warned, Sing-Alongs aren’t just sitting in the theater and cozily watching your favorite artists’ videos. In the past, the audience has been known to stand up and leave their seat behind entirely, and always seem to wannabe starting something. And we never stop ‘em.”—Henri Mazza via OriginalAlamo.com
The No Shame Sing-Along
Alamo Ritz 9:45pm
“We see you there, sitting in your car, wailing away to Richard Marx. It's okay; don't feel judged. When we saw you mouthing the words to Counting Crows in the grocery story we wanted to find ourselves a gray guitar and play too. And then we thought, "Man! Sing-alongs are fun, but we need more than an outlet for fun- we need an outlet to channel our inner sadness too." We're talking the sadness that keeps you up until 3 a.m. laying in your tub staring at the ceiling and listening to the Goo Goo Dolls on repeat. And with that we put together the No Shame Soft Rock Sing-Along with you in mind. It's a masterful collection of songs that you hate to know, secretly love to hear, and can't wait till you get back in your car so you can wail out loud. Also it's an excuse to put an otherwise criminal amount of Hall & Oats and Phil Collins in a show. So let those tears streak down your cheeks as you enter The Action Pack's judgement free zone.”—Greg MacLennan via OriginalAlamo.com

Master Pancake: Highlander
Alamo Ritz (thru 10/8) 7:00pm; 10:00pm
“Come on out and watch as Master Pancake decapitates one of the most awesomely bad movies of all time: Highlander (1986). Starring Christopher Lambert as the title character: an immortal Scottish swordsman who for no good reason speaks with a French accent. Co-starring Sean Connery as a Spaniard who inexplicably talks with a thick Scottish accent, and Clancy Brown as a scary giant called The Kurgan. With a ridiculous plot involving 16th-century Scotland, 1980s New York, a group of demi-gods called The Immortals, and a competition for supreme omnipotence called The Gathering, this movie has it all. Plus a great mid-‘80s fantasy vibe, sweet training montages, a soundtrack by Queen, and more beheadings than the French revolution! Comedians for this show include John Erler and special guests Owen Egerton and Scott Chester.”—Master Pancake’s John Erler via OriginalAlamo.com
Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure
Alamo South Lamar (thru 10/13) Check daily times
“The most important audio recording released in the nineties wasn’t a collection of songs by a self-tortured alternative star. The most important recording released in the grunge era was entitled ShUT Up LiTTLE MAn! It was a covert audio recording of two older drunken men living in a small flat in San francisco, who spent their available free time yelling, screaming, hitting and generally abusing each other. The phenomenon began in 1987 when Eddie and Mitch (two young punks from the Mid West), moved next door to Peter Haskett (a flamboyant gay man), and Raymond Huffman (a raging homophobe). This ultimate odd- couple hated each other with raging abandon, and through the paper-thin walls their alcohol-fueled rants terrorized Eddie and Mitch. Fearing for their lives they began to tape record evidence of the insane goings on from next door.”—OriginalAlamo.com
“If you missed The Dead during Fantastic Fest 2010, we are giving you a second chance to see the zombie movie like no other. After his plane crashes in the South African bush, Rob Freeman (Saving Private Ryan) joins forces with Prince David Osei (a superstar actor in his native Ghana) to cross the vast desert by any means necessary. A daunting task under normal circumstances becomes particularly challenging after the zombie apocalypse.”—OriginalAlamo.com
Big Screen Classics: The Evil Dead
Alamo Ritz (thru 10/8) 11:45pm
“Whether you're a rabid gore nut or the wimpy old Pope, you're well aware that the most monumental horror series of the 20th Century is The Evil Dead trilogy. Big-time filmmaker Sam Raimi and big-chin actor Bruce Campbell knocked out their baby teeth on these movies, heading deep into the woods to scare up massively effective shocks on a miniscule budget. And when the first Evil Dead hit theaters, horror cinema was altered forever. Now, through the efforts of Grindhouse Releasing, The Evil Dead has risen again to tear apart the big, big screen! Join not-quite-fearless warrior Ash in a fluid-soaked chainsaw-wielding battle with undead demonoids who possess, violate and kill using methods that would make Satan himself blush! It's the fright film that reinvented nightmares for an entire generation, and it's bigger, bloodier and backer than ever to tear your skull out through your eye sockets!”—OriginalAlamo.com
Alamo Survivor’s Tip: The Evil Dead is one of the greatest horror movies ever made. As we gear up for Halloween, the Alamo Drafthouse has lined up an amazing series of horror classics to whet your appetite. Seeing The Evil Dead on the big screen should be high on any horrorphile’s list.

UT Football
Alamo Ritz, Alamo Village, & Alamo South Lamar 11:00am
“The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is the premiere spot for watching UT Longhorn football in Austin. We feature the games on our movie screen with state of the art video projection. With the *possible* exception of live in the stadium, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is the best spot for the serious football fan. All eyes in the auditorium are focused on the movie screen, where the action on the field will be larger than life!”—OriginalAlamo.com
The All-Jem Saturday Morning Cartoon Cereal Party
Alamo Ritz Noon
“When most people think of female superheroes, they probably picture Wonder Woman or She-Ra. And sure, those ladies with capes have a lot of special skills...but can they rock a packed stadium through the sheer power of pop? I don't think so. There's only one superheroine that's truly, truly outrageous, and this installment of our Cartoon Cereal Party is dedicated to all of her glamor and glitter, fashion and fame. She is excitement; she is adventure; she's JEM! In celebration of the DVD release of all three seasons of the show, we've selected five of our all-time favorite episodes to share with you, along with an all-you-can eat buffet of super sugary breakfast cereal! Pajamas are always encouraged, and in honor of Jem's amazing fashion, feel free to accessorize with neon wigs, sparkly jewelry and a generous amount of eye shadow. We'll also have special Jem contest prizes from Shout Factory and Toy Joy! Join us for a drama-filled, rocktastic afternoon as we sing along with Jem, pretend to hate the Misfits (their songs are just so catchy!) and feel the power of Synergy!!”—Sarah Pitre via OriginalAlamo.com

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Alamo Village 11:55pm
Thrill to all the cheap laughs, cheap women, and cheap production values of one of the world’s premier bad movies. Watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show in-and-of-itself is an event, but it takes on a whole new life when witnessed within the walls of The Alamo Village with loads of audience participation, dressed-up patrons, and general wickedness that has become a vital component to the film’s meteoritic rise to cult film legend.
Alamo Survivor’s Tip: If there were one UT football game to catch at the Alamo Drafthouse, this weekend’s showdown with bitter rival Oklahoma is it. Come cheer the Longhorns to victory on the big screen.
Sunday October 9th
TAMI Presents: The Celluloid State
Alamo Ritz 5:00pm
“Getting old films off the shelves and on the web since 2002, the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) is a unique Austin-based institution providing digital access to vintage Texas films and revolutionizing the concept of the film archive. For the last four years, TAMI has travelled the state "rounding-up" more than 9,000 lost and discarded Texas films and providing new life to them through digitization and online access. The Celluloid State is a great opportunity to see four TAMI favorites on the big screen. Topics will include how to keep safe from Soviet nuclear attack in Austin, cycle safety tips from the 1970s and the world premiere of a completely restored 35mm print of The Kidnapper’s Foil - a short made in Childress, TX during the late 1930s by an itinerant filmmaker who filmed local versions of Our Gang comedies for over forty years. Don't miss this unique chance to experience these unique films ON film.”—OriginalAlamo.com
John Lennon Sing-Along
Alamo South Lamar 7:00pm; Alamo Lake Creek 7:00pm
“We are ringing in John Lennon’s 71st birthday with a no-holds bar celebration of his life and his music. From the skiffle days of Liverpool to the senseless murder at the Dakota Building, Lennon’s impact on the pop culture world is unmatched. He left us so many groundbreaking tunes, both with the Fab Four and as a solo artist, that whittling them down to the definitive Best of the Best for a Sing-Along was no easy feat. But we did it. We poured thru concerts, films, and amazing archival footage to tell the whole story of the mischievous and intellectual Beatle from start to end. Warning: this show packs a emotional punch.”—John Gross via OriginalAlamo.com
Cinema Club: Baby Face w/Caroline Frick
Alamo Ritz 7:00pm
“Newly discovered uncut print of this pre-code gem from the Library of Congress! Baby Face was one of the most notorious of all the films of the Pre-Code era - the time during the early Depression when the Hollywood studios virtually ignored the censors and offered up one sex-filled film after another. Public morals were so offended that the industry was forced to adopt an even stricter Production Code in 1934. Advertised with the titillating warning, ‘Parents: do not bring your children,’ Baby Face stars Barbara Stanwyck as an abused daughter who turns tricks out of a speakeasy in Erie, Pennsylvania, then heads to Manhattan, where she sleeps her way up the corporate ladder (with a young John Wayne, among many others). A longer (by five minutes), even racier version was recently discovered by the Library of Congress after being considered lost for years. (Film Forum). The Cinema Club is excited to present this pre-code masterpiece completely uncut, most likely for the first time it has EVER played in Texas! Presenting with us is the Texas Archive of the Moving Image Director Caroline Frick, a former film archivist at Warner Brothers.”—OriginalAlamo.com
Cine Las Americas: Octubre
Alamo Village 7:00pm
“The opaque and solitary life of a small time pawnbroker is affected when a baby suddenly appears, basket and all, in his apartment. His rancid vanity is disrupted, his solitary bitterness menaced at the edge of a transformation, and as much as he investigates the child’s precedence at the brothel he frequents, tries unsuccessfully to rid himself of the baby, or avoids getting comfortable with his neighbor after hiring her to look after the child; a gray habit of loneliness and isolation begins to crack down. The remote possibility of another life peeks in, among ghosts from the past and a present oppressive and absurd. Miracles happen to those who wish for them… and see them through.”—Eugenio, Cine Las Americas via OriginalAlamo.com
TV at the Alamo: Breaking Bad
Alamo South Lamar & Lake Creek 10:00pm
“This six-time Emmy Award winning drama from AMC is probably the best show about meth cookers since I Love Lucy. Bryan Cranston, who has won the Best Lead Actor award three years in a row, stars as Walter White, a science teacher turned crystal meth kingpin in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Every week, we will be watching last week's episode followed by the new episode, recorded on DVR so we can fastforward through commercials.”—OriginalAlamo.com
Big Screen Classics: The Shining
Alamo Ritz 10:00pm
“Just in time for Halloween, we’re showing the greatest horror film ever made. Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece about the Torrance family, holed up for the winter as the caretakers of the Overlook Hotel, is intense, stunning, and downright scary! It’s full of now-classic horror film moments, from ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY to “Heeere's Johnny!,” REDRUM, and those creepy twins, but it never feels clichéd or outplayed; it’s the kind of horror movie that ages well, the terrifying imagery and sounds only becoming stronger as the years go by. Starring Jack Nicholson from back when he was actually crazy, Shelley Duvall as the svelte wife with a baseball bat, and Scatman Crothers as Dick Hallorann, the Shining mentor for little Danny/Tony. As is our annual tradition, we’ll be serving up some red rum cocktails – this year, created by our new beverage director, Bill Norris!”—OriginalAlamo.com

Music Monday: Across the Universe
Alamo Ritz 7:00pm
“JOHN LENNON BIRTHDAY WEEK TRIBUTE. The Beatles' songs may have provided the soundtrack for the lives of those coming of age in the 1960s, but their extensive catalogue acts as the literal soundtrack in this romantic musical from visionary director Julie Taymor. Newcomer Jim Sturgess stars as Jude, a young man working on the docks in Liverpool. Eager to escape, he travels to Princeton where he meets Max (Joe Anderson). But it’s his meeting with Max’s younger sister, Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), that changes him. They quickly fall in love, but their relationship is tested by the chaos of the late 1960s and Max’s unwilling tour in Vietnam. Throughout the film, characters burst into classics from the Beatles: frat boys sing "With a Little Help from My Friends," while Uncle Sam bursts from a recruitment poster with strains of "I Want You (She’s So Heavy)." U2’s Bono makes a cameo as a counterculture leader and croons "I Am the Walrus," and actor-comedian Eddie Izzard provides a trippy rendition of "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite." Also screens October 11 for regular price.”—OriginalAlamo.com

“The Austin School of Film invites you to the 2011 CYC (Center for Young Cinema) Loud and Clear Film Festival. The event is a compilation of all of the amazingly creative works by our youth filmmakers and animators ages 10-18 in 2011.”—OriginalAlamo.com
The Thing (1982)
Alamo Village 7:00pm
One of the greatest horror films every made, John Carpenter’s terrifying remake of The Thing from Another World is a powerful, character-driven nightmare. The constant paranoia of not knowing if the person next to them is really human is what drives the suspense and Rob Bottin’s stellar practical effects are out of this world. Seeing this film on the big screen is the perfect Halloween appetizer.
Terror Tuesday: Creepers
Alamo Ritz: 10:15pm
“Dario Argento is the #1 name dropped by people who don’t really watch horror movies when they talk about how much they love to watch horror movies. He’s even mentioned in trash like Juno, for christ’s sake. But the fact is the prolific filmmaker has made more than enough terror classics to claim royalty. Though it’s not as widely viewed as his undeniable masterpiece Suspiria, Creepers may be his most bizarre and ambitious work. Jennifer Connelly stars as a young lady who can telepathically communicate with insects, and in the grand Argento tradition, she’s sent to an all-girl boarding school where her classmates are being murdered by a mysterious figure in black leather gloves. Can she and horrormeister Donald Pleasance discover the truth amid crushing waves of six-legged creatures, slashings, disfigured human oddities and worse? Italy…what a revolting dump!”—Zack Carlson via OriginalAlamo.com
AFS Essential Cinema: Tommy
Alamo South Lamar 7:00pm
“Rendered blind, deaf, and mute by witnessing the murder of his war-hero father by his step-dad, Tommy discovers his true talent in playing pinball through intuition. His fame spreads and fortune follows, but after regaining all his senses, he becomes a new kind of Messiah as he shares simple stories of his inner life. Ken Russell’s non-stop, relentless visualization of the famous rock opera will leave you gasping for breath. “—OriginalAlamo.com

SxSW Presents: Where Soldiers Come From
Alamo South Lamar 7:00pm
“From a snowy small town in Northern Michigan to the mountains of Afghanistan and back, Where Soldiers Come From follows the four-year journey of childhood friends and their town, forever changed by a faraway war. A documentary about growing up, Where Soldiers Come From is an intimate look at the young men who fight our wars and their town. Returning to her hometown, Austin documentarian Heather Courtney gains extraordinary access following these young men as they grow and change from teenagers stuck in their town, to 23-year-old veterans facing the struggles of returning home.
Girlie Night: Splash
Alamo Village 7:00pm
“Sure, everyone loves Ariel, with her big red hair and tiny purple shell bra. But in my mind, no Disney underwater vixen can compete with Daryl Hannah in Splash. From the moment I laid my seven-year-old eyes on her crimped blonde hair and cool red tail, I knew I wanted to grow up and be a mermaid. It's easy to see why an adorably young Tom Hanks falls in love with her! I mean, not only does Madison have major life-saving skills, she also learned English from watching TV, eats lobsters whole and has a totally healthy body image. Basically, she's awesome, and to this day, I'm sad I never found a college where I could major in How to Be a Mermaid. Complementing Daryl Hannah and Tom Hank's totally charming performances is the legendary John Candy, whose wardrobe alone should have been nominated for an Academy Award. (It wasn't, but the screenplay was!) I guarantee that we'll pack six fun-filled days worth of magic into this month's Girlie Night, so join us as we screech along with Madison, boo Dr. Kornbluth and squee ourselves silly under the sea. Anyone have a crimper I can borrow?”—OriginalAlamo.com

They Wear No Clothes: Varietease & The Body Beautiful
Alamo Ritz 7:30pm
“Justly famous as one of the two big screen appearances of Bettie Page (who is phenomenal, of course), Varietease is also a very special historical document of a pretty typical stage burlesque show. In addition to the strip performances by the likes of Lili St. Cyr and Chris LaChris, there are baggy pants comedians performing jokes dating back to the Jurassic period, a terrible singer and even stripper Vicki Lynn, who has that "extra something" (you'll just have to watch the movie to find out what it is). Playing with the 1940s burlesque short The Body Beautiful. A really rare gem.”—Lars Nilsen via OriginalAlamo.com
Weird Wednesday: Jailbait Babysitter
Alamo Ritz 10:00pm
“’She’s underage, illegal, and she’s in your bedroom.’ ‘She’ll give it all, but one thing she can’t give is legal consent.’ ‘What she’ll do will get you 25 long years.’ ‘Why does the girl you always desired have to be jailbait?’ As you can tell from the verbiage, Jailbait Babysitter is a film of weighty issues and tender concern for social ills. It’s also a king-size barrel of yuks. Bring the whole family to see this cautionary tale about a young, innocent girl who falls in with the wrong crowd and is soon up to her budding pubescent breasts in trouble – sexy trouble. Supposedly featuring John Goodman’s first screen appearance. I didn’t spot him the first time around, maybe because I was looking at all the boobies. This time, I’ll pay much closer attention. Together we’ll spot that son of a bitch. I promise.”—Lars Nilsen via OriginalAlamo.com

We’ll have all of our favorite lines subtitled karaoke-style so that they pop up on the screen in white seconds before the character says the line, then highlights in yellow along with the dialog so we can all yell out, “She’s so DRUNK!” when Shaun and Ed first discover the zombie in their backyard. PLUS! We’ve ordered a full crate of inflatable cricket bats from England so that every time Shaun whacks a zombie to make a break for it, you can live out that excitement in the theater. Whack the person next to you and get whacked right back. Use your brains! Your delicious, scrumptious brains…”—Henri Mazza via OriginalAlamo.com
