Watching the Oscars® together as a family is a great way to get kids more excited about what goes into making their favorite flicks, as well as introducing them to the movies you love. Here are some ideas to make it a fun event for everyone.
1. Dress to Impress: To get kids in the mood, ask everyone to dress up in their most glamorous outfit, even if their choice consists of superhero capes. And let them pick out your outfit too. No cheating. Or, if you’re feeling really creative, the whole family could dress up as favorite movies characters like these.
2. Get in Character: Spend some time making some movie-themed snacks together during the preshow in support of favorite movies and characters like Paddington, Baymax or the Penguins of Madagascar.
3. Make a Speech: As funny as Neil Patrick Harris is, be prepared for your kids to lose interest. Especially during the acceptance speeches. Why not turn the volume off, throw them their own statue and let them have a go at thanking everyone who got them where they are today (hopefully you will be prominently featured!)
4. Rock the Vote: You can also create your own fun categories and vote on them yourselves. Possibilities could be anything from “cutest kid” in a movie to “best animal costume.” The sky’s the limit. One category your kids will want to watch is best animated feature, even if The Lego Movie was snubbed. So before the big award is announced, have everyone fill out their choice for the winner. Meanwhile, all the grown-ups in the room can cast their votes in all categories using Fandango’s ballot printable.
5. Sing Along: You might want to send the kids to bed after the big cartoon win. But if they are a little older, let them stay up to watch the performances of the nominated original songs. "Everything Is Awesome" is fun for everyone and teen favorites Rita Ora and Adam Levine are performing as well.
6. Party Down: Feeling inspired? Why not go whole hog and throw an Oscar party for your kids and their friends? Check out this spectacular party that Mom's Lifesavers whipped up, complete with a red-carpet backdrop, family-friendly movie ballots and adorable swag bags. So fun and affordable!
