- What is Coppelia (Paris Ballet) - LIVE about?
- From its creation onwards in 1870, Coppélia or The Girl with Enamel Eyes was an enormous success. Considered to be emblematic of the French choreographic style, it has remained in the Opera repertoire ever since and been the subject of numerous reinterpretations. In the adaptation he devised for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1996, Patrice Bart returned to the literary origins that inspired the ballet–Hoffmann's fantasy tale, the more bizarre elements of which had been edited out by the original creators Arthur Saint-Léon, Charles Nuitter and Léo Delibes. Returning to the theme of the doll that comes to life in the hands of its inventor, Patrice Bart underlines the depth of his characters and makes Coppélius a sombre and disquieting man haunted by the image of a woman loved and lost and whose memory is evoked by Swanilda. In collusion with set designer Ezio Toffolutti and his effects of transparency, replication and illusion, the ballet exudes a troubling and mysterious atmosphere.
