    Savage Grace

Director Tom Kalin has only made one other full-length feature in 1992. That was the amazing ?Swoon?, a true story about Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold Jr., gay lovers who kidnapped and murdered a child in the 1920s just to see what it would be like. Now, sixteen years later, he has returned with the equally amazing ?Savage Grace?, also based on true events, dramatizing the story of the shocking murder of socialite Barbara Daly Baekeland by her own son in 1972.

This beautifully filmed and acted movie is not easy to watch. The story, which features a mother-son relationship that is very disturbing and ultimately very sad, doesn?t shy away from its subject matter. Some people have criticized this film for its unemotional look at some very non-sympathetic characters, but I found it more disturbing and factual in doing so. These people were what they were and trying to make them sympathetic would have disguised the horror of the situation.

    Moore's shadow

All of the actors fell into Moore's shadow and couldn't stand up to her level of performance. The story was interesting, however it felt underdeveloped and I found myself wanting to know more. I wish it would sa=tay with places, events and people just a little bit longer to give a fuller view of what was going on. The story itself is really very interesting though. Outstanding Performance by Julianne Moore

This is a very disturbing film with many good qualities. The viewer is taken on a posh tour of enclaves for the wealthy in New York, London, Paris and Mallorca from the late 1940s through the film's end in 1972. It is captivating to watch. Julianne Moore portrays a real-life character who becomes more hateful as the movie progresses. Even though she is beautiful and dressed in French haute couture, her performance resembles Charlize Theron's Oscar-winning role in Monster. It's like watching the wreck of a sleak silver streamliner. The film is definitely Oscar-worthy for the performances and treatment of its subject matter, but it is also so over-the-top I can't believe the Academy will touch it. Definitely not for the squeamish, this movie will keep you enthralled and will remain with you for a long time but not in a good way.
