After finally predicting the box office winner, I’m looking to make it two straight this week as four films enter the box office battle arena, with one of them being a 3D re-release of an older (but beloved) animated movie. Will the familiar toon take out the thriller, the comedy and The Gosling? Let’s take a closer look …
What’s the Scoop: In this hip, smooth fan-favorite, Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt performer who doubles as a getaway driver for criminals – that is, until one of his heists goes wrong, and some bad dudes want him dead.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: C’mon, it’s The Gosling. Not only is it The Gosling, but it’s The Gosling behind the wheel of a car, acting all badass while seducing Carey Mulligan. It’s the perfect date movie … if your date is just a bit off center and loves soundtracks that transport you back to the 1980s.
What’s the Scoop: In this remake of the 1971 film starring Dustin Hoffman, tensions begin to boil over when a young couple from the city move into a home in the deep South, surrounded by a bunch of guys who are up to no good … and then some.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: The familiar title may draw some older fans in, while the sight of Alexander Skarsgard without a shirt on should round up the ladies, and the sight of Alexander Skarsgard being a badass should entice a good amount of boys, too. Everyone wins with this one.
What’s the Scoop: Sarah Jessica Parker stars as a finance executive who’s juggling a clan that includes a husband and two children – as well as the fact that she’s the breadwinner of her family – in this comedy that’s very fitting for the times we live in.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: I don’t know how she does it, but Sarah Jessica Parker still knows how to bring ‘em to the theater.
What’s the Scoop: This Disney classic about a lion who reinvents himself and discovers the true meaning of life after he’s tricked into thinking he’s responsible for his father’s death is returning to theaters in 3D for the very first time.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Because it’s The Lion King, duh. And it’s in 3D!
My Prediction: I don’t know how they do it, but you put a classic Disney cartoon in theaters and the kids will flock to it. Strange to go with the older re-release over the new ones, but something tells me The Lion King 3D will prevail.
My Pick of the Week: If you ask me, I say you hop in that old, beat-up Toyota Sonata of yours and drive over to your local theater to love the hell out of Drive.
Now it’s your turn to pick the box office winner. Sound off below with your predictions, and we’ll circle (of life) back here on Monday to see how we all did.
