Viggo Mortensen To Work With David Cronenberg Again, Talks 'Eastern Promises 2'

As A Dangerous Method continues to make the festival rounds (it just screened in Toronto this week), Viggo Mortensen, who is earning praise for his performance as Sigmund Freud, chatted with The Playlist about working with legendary maverick director David Cronenberg, playing Freud and his next role as Old Bull Lee in Walter Salles’ On the Road.

We’ll skip the appetizers and head straight to the most tantalizing portion of the interview, in which Mortensen said that working with Cronenberg has been such a great experience (they’ve made three movies together) that he is sure the two will continue to work together in the future, possibly on a sequel to 2007’s Eastern Promises.

“I think that’s still a possibility, but something we’ll definitely do together I’m sure and I’m looking forward to it already, whatever it is.”

A quick refresher for the masses: The 2007 flick centered on a violent Russian mob family earned Mortensen his first and thus far only, Oscar nomination. The story followed a Russian teenager living in London who dies during childbirth and leaves clues to a midwife in her journal that links her child to a rape involving the Russian mob.

Granted a sequel to the movie has been rumored for well over a year now and there’s been nothing to show for it. This latest nugget from Mortensen though seems to lead us to believe the sequel is still on the To Do List. Then again, we could all be wrong and the duo could come out with a sequel to A History of Violence.

What do you think. Would you like to see a second Eastern Promises movie? What would it be about?
