Trailer Watch: ‘The Karate Kid’ and ‘Sex and the City 2’

By: Erik Davis on December 23, 2009 at 9:45AM Comments (15)

In what has to be some sort of Hollywood record, even more trailers arrived online since we last met … and it’s starting to become a bit of a chore to keep up with all of them. While we’re expecting the latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception to hit at anytime, here are two more previews for a couple of buzzed-about 2010 films.

Nope, they’re not re-releasing the old 1984 classic starring Ralph Maccio and Pat Morita. Instead, this is the 2010 remake, complete with hip-hop tunes, Will Smith’s kid Jaden, and Jackie Chan as the lovable martial arts mentor. Like in the previous incarnation, this one follows a kid and his mom who move overseas to start a new life (the original had them moving from New Jersey to California). Of course there are mean kids who beat up our out-of-towner, but when he hooks up with a guy who really knows how to kick some butt, things change pretty fast.

I originally thought this movie looked horrible, but after watching the trailer – and enjoying all the subtle nods to the original – I have to say that this actually looks pretty decent. We won’t really know until it hits theaters on June 11th, 2010.

Watch the trailer over on Yahoo and let us know what you think.

The first film saw so many women running to the theater that you almost thought they were giving away free cosmos and manicures or something. Thus, here we are with a sequel to the first Sex and the City, which itself was based on the long-running HBO series. What’s there to know? The girls – Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) are all back and looking sensational.

This time, however, they’re not just staying in New York. Oh no, they’re taking their wild, carefree, shopping-spree ways global, baby! There’s nothing here that looks even remotely attractive to me, but then again I’m definitely not the target audience. Check out the trailer over here and let us know what you think. Will Sex and the City 2 do as well as the original? It hits theaters on May 28, 2010.

It is quite ridiculous and a little ignorant to call the movie "Karate" Kid when he is in China learning Kung Fu. They mind as well call it the "Kung Fu" Kid. Wasn't "Never Back Down" pretty much a Karate Kid movie remake anyway?

I hope Jayden has woked on his acting skills. He was really bad in that Sci Fi movie w/ Keanu Reeves last year. Really bad.

Yes, obviously, they should call this "The KUNG-FU Kid"....! C'mon Mr. Chan, you are better than that! Don't try to pawn this off as a remake. It is an 80's classic that defined where many of us were at the time... (being most of us are in our 30's+, we would like to remember things as they were...). PLEASE, reconsider the title!!! And the music of that time was better than what they have in mind, I'd bet money on that! And, here's an idea, if KUNG-FU Kid were to be the title, everybody was "KUNG-FU" fighting, could be used as a hook for the credits song... See the possibilities. Just leave Mr. Morita's crowning achievment be. God Bless and Merry Christmas

And Mr Miagi (spelling?) was Japanese, a WWII hero for Japan, etc. Also, KaRaTe is JAPANESE!!! And you Mr. Chan are CHINESE... And, the scene image is on the Great Wall of CHINA...!!! We are a smarter public than you may think (to you in the Hollywood board rooms who think these things up)...!!! It feels like were gonna get fisted...!!!

This really is the lamest excuse for a remake I've ever seen. We're supposed to be made to believe that Will Smith's son (complete with the cornrows) is getting abused by a group of Chinese boys and he would need to be taught Kung Fu to defend himself?

This is just sad in so many different ways.. As a big fan of Jackie Chan, a fan of Pat Morita's Karate Kid, a fan of movies and a fan of storie telling. Pat Morita's Mr Miagi is a classic role that should be left alone, if Mr Chan wants to make a movie, the Kung Fu Kid is fine.. Im sure it will still be entertaining.. but the disctintion has to be made between Japanese Karate in the first film and Chinese Kung fu in the second one.. The casting of the Kid, Will Smith's son was too easy. I am sure there are more capable kid actors out there who could provide a more genuine sense of need and realism than a kid who's dad has very good connections obviously..NOT a fan of Macchio but he is still remembered for that role, Jaden Smith? Cmon

Been awhile without a date ."Sweetheart"? Because if you don't get it in Sex and the City then you just don't get it. These are victimless empowered women who have control of their own lives. My friends and I dress up and do the town- manicures, hairstyles, dinner and drinks. Its a little bit of glamour in this pathetic economy, Whores? I don't think so. Shows that you have no knowledge of the first movie or the long running HBO tv series. Reply Characters Remaining: 750 Share on News Feed E-mail me when someone replies to this commen

I am not a big fan of remakes, but I will give it some defense. The title can remain b/c the general population is familiar with the term Karate & hence the original motion picture. Also, Karate is a form of Martial Arts & so is Chinese Kung Fu. Karate has roots from China, so there is nothing wrong with the setting. Yes, there are probably other actors that could have taken Jaden's place, but give him a chance. As an avid Martial Artist/movie buff, I felt like I could have done a better than Macchio. What most of us are misunderstanding is the premise of the movie. A youth coming of age, becoming enlightened & overcoming odds. The original was a classic, perfect for its time! With changing themes in karate films, the remake may work.

Why worry whether it's Karate, or Kung Fu, or Chow Mein, and whether it's in China, Japan, Californiia, or Ireland? And what difference does it make who plays the kid and the teacher? The movie is the story, It's getting out of our own lives for a couple of hours, and being a part of other people's lives. Give it a chance...if your not entertained, then they failed.

Give the "Kid" a break! Obviously this won't win an Oscar or a Golden Globe, but it does look entertaining. The original version will always be a classic, but I would not be surprised if this one does better at the box office.
